Q: Are the Chinese police EVER Helpful?
I got robbed two weeks ago by 3 guys with knives. My wallet, watch, ring, and glasses were stolen! My first question is who the F$%k steals your glasses?!! I also got several cuts (some deep) on my arm and 3 displaced bones in my left-hand (I'm a lefty). They wanted me to use my bank card to hand over the contents of my bank account. I wouldn't have fought about the matter, except for the fact I had my withdraw limit increased. Which meant I could take out 100,000 rmb.
So. The first I did was go to the hospital to get stitched up and have my bones set. While there I also called the police to report the matter. They immediately came to the hospital and dragged my ass out of bed to give a statement! Can you believe that shiat?! I was bleeding out and in pain and these f-kers want my statement. I asked if they could give me a moment, but the pigs took me and my doctor into another room and made me recount everything BEFORE I could get stitched up.
And then, after it was all said and done (I got stitched up), the doctor told me I had to wait to set my displaced bones because of swelling. So I thought I could go home and have a rest. WRONG!!! The cops dragged my arse to the police station and made me wait while they searched for cameras in the area that may have caught a recording of the incident. I got robbed around 11pm, I was out of the hospital by about 4am, and at 7am I was STILL IN THE POLICE STATION.
By about 8:30am they told me I had to go to a different police station because the area where I was robbed was not in their jurisdiction. I begged them to let me go home and rest. DID NOT GET TO REST. I waited until almost 10am for the other police station to send a car to take me to their office. Went through the whole process again. They got the camera recording, and then BLAM!! They ALSO TOLD ME that place was outside of their jurisdiction. So I had to go to ANOTHER police station. By the time I got to the third station it was almost NOON!!
I finally realized I best call the American consulate in Guangzhou and beg them to tell these assholes to let me go home. As it worked out, that was the right choice. About 30 minutes later I went home. FINALLY!!
That night the cops went to my house, banged on my door until I woke up, made me get ready and go back to the station because I was, in their minds, RESTED. MOTHER F#%KERS!!
Is this normal? I loved China until this shiat happened. I don't cry because I got robbed. I feel upset because I feel like the people the screwed me over the most weren't the thieves that robbed me, it was those GD PIGS.
I hate cops every where. Cops in DR tried to nail me for a bribe. I got robbed in Philippines by a bargirl, cops came with me to bar where bargirls aunt and cousin worked. I want to know where bargirl lives. Cops say they can not question relatives. WTF? I like that cops in China can't talk to me. If they can speak English, I can fake speaking French.
Sorry you got robbed, and there is no crime in China? I knew that I had 3 guys following me one night. My apartment entrance was rear of building, down a long dark lane and everyone seemed to know where I lived. I just kept zig zagging across the road and hopping over the barricades. I watched them follow me. Fricken cowards, they're brave when they out number you.

I saw a TV program on the scientist that discovered age of earth. He discovered that lead from gasoline had polluted the entire planet. He was involved in getting rid of leaded gas. China still uses lead in paint etc. I read about a shipment of dishes being imported from China was denied because the glaze contained lead. I don't know how customs found that out.
Recently I was standing on one side of a street waiting to cross. A car smacked into another (a result of keeping distance with Chinese characteristics) the front passenger was not wearing seatbelt, she smacked her head into the dash and got a pretty bad nosebleed. On the other side of the street. 3 of China's finest... at the moment, in response to the sounds of two cars, one looks, he certainly sees the accident, I'd think he cannot see the woman bleeding, but hey, despite this being during a 80 second time of the little green man allowing him to cross the street, he doesn't. One of the 3 never actually turns around, at the second little green man cycle, one of them slowly strolls across the street.
Interestingly, while the womans husband (or driver) was trying to blame the driver of the stationary car he'd just hit, a couple of people went to help the bleeding woman.
Are police anywhere helpful?

Yes they are. In most of Europe they are, in the US they are. I've asked a copper for directions in Seoul he even added a smile + "have nice day"

I don't think it's fair to compare US cops with police in other countries.
I was talking to a Dutch guy I know, who admits that the police there have a lot of powers, and can be quite arrogant (and ruthless), but they've got a damn good transparent system, and you pull them up, they have to respond (ie, "Oi, why did you do X?" - they are required by law to explain themselves... though maybe not right then and there).

I agree with Spider! in US, every Police car is equipped with speedometer, in other words 'once he's behind you, you're done!' It won't help you to slow done! Too late!
No such a thing in EU 20Y ago! Cops would mostly set up 'speed traps'!US cop is 'money maker', once he's on the street. Not much of a help, either.
Depends. If you're Chinese and you want to report a foreigner, then YES they are helpful.

Yesterday, I stopped military humvee and Police car with blue lights on, on the pedestrian crossing, so kids from my school could cross the street at lunch break. I usually wait and let 'blue light' pass. Not in China!
Kids loved! They think, I'm some kind of 'super-laucher'. The funniest was, all adult Chinese were waiting on the side, while me and some 20 kids crossed...
I hold Fl driver license, and once I was driving from Ft. Lauderdale to Cape Cod with 10Y old Mercedes 190. A bit remodelled, pretty fast machine, and I like speed while in the car or on the bicycle.
I was 'measured' in Georgia (I-95) just by the border with S. Carolina doing around 110 m/h.
Cop checked my Fl license, and told me my DL was suspended. Cop took me to the Police 'Camp', my car was impounded or whatever.
At the Police 'tent', they put me in jail. I wasn't intoxicated or any drugs in my system or in the car.
After 8 days in jail, cops 'hand+legs cuffed me'. Handcuffes around arms and legs, connected with chain in between. They took me in front of the judge. Judge said: 'blaaablaa, fine is 'time served + some US$300 fine'. I had $300 cash on me, when arrested. Georgia is brutal!
On my return to Fl, I stopped in the Driving license office, and asked: 'Why my DL is suspended?'
Cop: 'Sorry sir, we made a mistake!'
It was just stinky '40 miles over 70 miles speed limit'!
Cops in Georgia were counting am probably 'drunk and car full of dope, and what not'. When they didn't find anything incriminating in the car, they locked me up for 8 days.
Because, I was driving a bit faster than regular people on deserted highway. In EU you can drive as fast as you can on the highway's left lane.
I thought US is the same. Scumbags!
Cops in US are much better than in China!

How was the prison food? 40 over the speed limit usually gets you some free room and board.

They had to take me out of jail 3 times a day, 'cause no syringes allowed in cell.
Point was, fine shouldn't be jail, but just monetary (a lot). Scumbags had to make up some shit, to get me in. Add-it: Cop said:'Because you're driving with suspended license, and 40 over speed limit, you go to jail!'

They didn't have to make up anything. You were doing 40 over the limit, which is considered reckless endangerment (felony) in most states. A lot of states also have a little statute that kicks in when you get caught doing triple digit speeds (100+ mph)....automatic jail time. If your license hadn't already been suspended, they probably would have taken it from you. You got what you deserved....these cops did the rest of the motorists a favor.

My first traffic offense in US. It's true story, happened in 1996 or 7! I don't write lies as anon on Internet. If I'll tell you lie, I'll also come back and tell you how stupid you are, mostly in the real life!
I-95 was empty, some cars here and there around 8pm, so I let it go! I've never been involved in traffic accident as driver of 30 years, and I consider my driving as 'safe'LOL!
@mike: I posted story to point out US cops are no better than Chinese! I agree today, that driving was 'endangerment' of some kind, but you did't go to jail for 'over speed limit driving' 20Y ago in EU, if not intoxicated???You got suspended license for 1/2 year the most, but not jail time!

Sounds like your argument is with US driving laws, NOT the police. Driving laws are designed to keep everyone safe. It sounds like you were probably a little bit of an assh*le to the police. Maybe you exchanged some foul words? If so, that explains why they threw you in jail. If you did 8 days, it means you went in front of a magistrate (judge). You probably didn't know it at the time because often times it's not in a court room. It's usually at a cubicle or service window. But, they have the same power as a judge. You were probably a little bit argumentative, so the magistrate held you in contempt of court. That would explain your jail sentence.

Arrest and jail in Georgia came to me as a complete 'surprise'! Even my US friends were surprised. Comments were: 'Georgia is different!'
At that time, you would get jail in EU for the same thingy, only if intox.
I don't remember in detail, how I got my car out of impound. That was another big deal, after I got out of slammer. I think, I used my International driver license, and I needed loads of cash for get car released from impound.
Look around in some really shady places. If you're crafty enough, you can find black markets that sell guns at a decent price.
Buy a gun. Buy the bullets. Carry it with you. If they try anything, pull it out, shoot all the robbers in the head, and walk off like nothing happened. Go home, take off your clothes, have a shower, put the clothes in a trash bag, and take them to the places where they set fires at night and throw them in.
Anyone threatening your life should be killed. They don't deserve to live. Chinese police, like American police, are just there to clean up. When seconds count, the police are minutes away. Everyone has the right to defend themselves. In China, it's basically illegal, so you should hide the evidence.

It is! Also, through a legal loophole, in USA you don't have to register/tax stamp on a machine gun if you machine it at home.
I can picture one situation where police in China might accidentally help me, but only because they think they're harming me: Maybe if I'm expelled from China as an unwelcome immigrant, unable to return, then it will be easier to immigrate in my home country with Chinese wife? I've honestly thought about it.
This is why crime statistics are so low in China, this tactic is used to discourage people from reporting crimes. That is why Chinese don't go to the police.

agree. Stats are only good if they're reported. Doesn't mean China is safer.
Where in Guangzhou did that happen? What neighborhood/district? I tend to head down there once or twice a year and I know lots of people on this site live there full time.
Please for all our sakes let us know where this happened so we can avoid it.
The police in China aren't properly trained to deal with real conflict, they're just bureaucrats and pen pushers. and they hate it if you create work for them; it took me over three hours to get a police report for a stolen passport. And now they're giving them guns...
