The poster with the stalked gf has me curious about self defense for women. If it's available to women, do women actually take classes?

Yes they do! A girl was in a jiu jitsu class here in beijing rolling with the men. There are also girls taking kickboxing classes at least in Beijing they are.
it is available but best to buy a knife.

You have to be as quick <at least> as your attacker. He or she isn't going to wait when you call time out to hunt for your knife. I'm much more confident in my ability to defend myself with my hands and body than I would be trying to dig through my purse or in my pocket to find and arm a weapon, and then actually using the weapon.

If you get a knife make sure it's from Cutco. They won't mess with you if they knew the superior quality and what it could do.
When it comes to a fight, your best weapons are your feet. You use them to get as far away as fast as possible. :)
Actually, I encourage all my female (and male) employees to learn basic martial arts. I have even hired instructors to come in and do training sessions from time to time. If the employee likes it, I pick up half the bill for their classes.
Yes, definitely! I've seen a few... though not many!
In fact, I see that most freshmen at the unis I've been to have to do some sort of 'martial arts' as part of P.E.... of course, they do it like girls, so it's almost a waste of time. (let's face it, women are just as physically able as guys, should they choose to be. Most women are just indoctrinated into believing they have to be a certain way - and that way is, in this regard, weak!) So, when they're punching, it is so half-hearted and weak as to be a waste of time. If they actually go to a martial arts school, they're better...
I also knew a good Tai Qi and Kung Fu instructor who won lots of awards, who was teaching (her style of Kungfu was more suitable to a lazy bastard like me )
