Q: Are CNY flower markets a national thing?

I live in the South, and every year we go to the new year flower market.   We used to have one a few streets from us, but for some reason that is not happening this year so we had to go further afield.

Is this a national thing? Are flower markets a tradition in the North too?

If not, what is the traditional CNY market where you live?

I am just interested in how traditions vary over such a vast country.

In Kaifeng, Henan, flower market certainly is cultural thing. My campus is all in flowers (must be in season) with large maintenance crew.

I don't think so, the North is freezing at that time of the year. Here in Foshan my girlfriend went there two days ago, I was busy otherwise I would have been to.

Scotsman, my compadre... are you pissed?  China is in the depth of winter right now.  It's freezing, it's snowing, the ice makes movement problematical.

So...no, there aren't any flower markets around at the moment.

Now, that said, it's positively balmy weather here today...only minus 6.   I had to strip off my gear as I rode about the town.

It seems as if there's more than one China.

It`s tee shirt weather down south Royce. 21 degrees above zero :-) When we went to the flower market the other day it felt like it was 25 degrees.

royceH:

I remember last winter we visited Yunnan and yeah, like you, it was low/mid 20s every day.

But I actually really enjoy the cold weather out here.  My first couple of winters here were in Qingdao and I can laugh now at how I thought it must have been the coldest place in the world.

I come from Queensland where the average winter day is low 20s odd so this variance I'm experiencing these days in Nth Xinjiang is something of a buzz.

I was in Guangzhou for the CNY and we went to the flower market / festival. We must've spent 3 hours on that street walking up and down looking but we didn't buy any flowers or any other gifts. Window shopping at its best...

I was dragged flower shopping before CNY with my wife, not to the temporary flower markets but to the big one in Huadiwan. Ended up coming back with a car full of plants & shrubs! Peach blossom tree, mint, Rosemary & various other flowers!

Then we had to rig up watering bottles as we were going away for two weeks!
