I saw that a couple of recent movies were pretty heavily cut for their showings in China. This got me thinking, are the copied DVDs that you buy usually cut as well, or do they copy the international version of the movie? The reason I ask is that although copying movies is no doubt illegal, such stores are all over the place and don't seem to run into many problems with the law. Is this because they sell the cut movies? I swear I've seen 7 years in tibet for sale here before...

They sell both. It really depends on the source.
If the source is an American DVD it is not cut, if the source is a Chinese DVD or a recording from a Chinese cinema, then it will be cut/censored.
My golden rule is that if they have Chinese subtitles that you cannot remove from the menu, then the source is probably Chinese.
