Q: Are diaoyu islands going to cause WW3?

So America has just firmly given two fingers up to China's attempt at controlling airspace over Diaoyu islands. Will these tiny collection of rocks cause WW3 or do you think an amicable solution will be reached. My guess: some South China Sea Cold War games.

As long as it is the US that is screwing with the small minded people, then nothing will happen. The feces will hit the ventilator when one of the other south Asian countries has had enough of the fun and games.

Not at all.  Unless the Japs get there back up. Then China will be forced to go Nuclear to defend itself.  Then the Americans will have to ask themselves: Obliterate China for the sake of  a country that hit Pearl Harbor in 41. Or let Japan become a province of China?

Sit back and enjoy the show. Many military planners will be very interested to see how much Chinese military strategy has developed.

i like Donnie's answer the best.  i am curious to see how china's military strategies have changed, not since the art of war, i mean since more recent times.  like world war II or the whole India fiasco..

Hi smog,

Interesting name. Are you from El Lay or live/have lived in Beijing? The situation with this fussing over some islands is completely ridiculous. If there's any sanity at all..ergo diplomacy, working together with cool heads, etc. there WILL NOT be a WW3. :0

I think WW3 would have happened by now.  Look at all that's happened everywhere not just here.

It's all about face, to be honest, with the US 65-35% on Japan's side.  Sad thing is, this will rumble on for many more years to come.

Its one of those problems that, to any child, is resolved very easily. The complications come from cultural and religious issues. In this case we have a group of small islands. They are uninhabited and worth nothing. Simple answer, share them. Unfortunately neither the Chinese or the Japanese would dare ''loosing face'' as a result of this ludicrous suggestion and both seem quite happy to allow a situation to escalate to what may very well result in war.

If you want to see how it'll turn out just look at the Israel/Palestine situation. Two nations of roughly equivalent status both have a claim to a piece of land. The obvious answer is to divide the land equally. Unfortunately there are religious nutjobs on both sides who feel that God gave them the land. This situation remains the biggest threat of starting a nuclear war by the way.

How many more people will die if China and Japan don't stop blowing raspberries at each other like proud toddlers fighting over the last lollipop?

Speaking as a parent I think that the greatest danger we face today is not island disputes or terrorist threats, it is in fact Lego. Now hear me out; you see, you come home, holding in the pressures of the day, tiptoe across the hall for fear of waking up the baby, slip off your shoes and find your way across the living room in the dark, reaching out for the lamp and then, bam, you step on the hard plastic edge of a block of Lego and the emotional dam inside you breaks. The next thing you know you come to standing in a foreign country, bloody shreds of flesh hanging from the bayonet of your rifle, wondering how you got there. Lego I tell you.
