I think they can be quite handy for newcomers as you do pick up quite a few useful fliers providing info on expat services. Many people just go for the free stuff though.

Expat shows are events for foreigners which are usually held in major cities like Shanghai and Beijing. They attract many exhibitors who set up booths with fliers and promotional gifts. You can anything from health insurance companies to dentists, beauty salons to NGO stalls represented. Here's info about this year's Shanghai one:

Huh?!? Thanks for the info denny18, I had no idea all these years something like that even existed... I guess that's the price you pay for avoiding the expat circles!

It's pointless to get to this kind of show.

I have been there once with with my wife and the only you get it's countless number of phone calls after the show to sell this or that kind of product, insurance, financial services, etc.

If you want to go there to have a look, just printed out some fake business cards (you need to give one at the entrance) with a fake phone number, email address and name before you get in.
The first year, I got not less than 25 phone calls. Second year, with fake business cards....none.

Frankly, it's just a bunch of companies who introduce their products and push you to buy them through meeting, phone calls, etc.
