Q: Are foreigners too greedy?

Consider - we come to China to find a nice cushy job... and such as myself are (was) offered a position - 16 teaching hours for 6000 plus accom, flights, and a domestic travelling allowance. I turned it down, cos it was too cheap for me, given my exp and quals (I just came off a job that paid more than double, and I'm now looking for higher).

I compare that to my Chinese friends who are lucky to get 3000, dodgey accomodation (such as a dorm), none of this flights stuff... and also if they're lucky, 'meals' (in quote marks, cos they're usually crap!)

I presume I'm not alone in this mentality (although, without the exp and quals, the pay is lower...).

So, given we're usually paid significantly higher than the locals, and reject low paying jobs - do you think we're too greedy??

Let's take your 3000 number as an average (which I agree with, as I have several college graduate friends making this level of salary).  That's 36,000 rmb/year which comes out to....5,660 USD/year, Yikes!  I wouldn't consider turning that salary down as being "greedy".

No, I don't think so AT ALL. And, what I DO NOT want to hear which typically the Chinese will say is how low a salary the Chinese make. B.S.! :( Save the guilt trip! :( I'm also making much less than what I did previously. Do you think a Chinese citizen would turn down a higher wage? Of course not!!

personally If I work in China it is not for the cushy job aspect

for me it is to make money

However I'm not a English teacher even if I do help out and do a class now and then.

We all come to China for different reasons  some financial some for personal reasons

Just don't forget you may have a life outside of China some day and what you do now may have a effect on it (good or Bad).

I am sure all Chinese will always take the highest salary possible, and there are also many who get much higher salaries than me. They put the their luxury cars in three level elevators here. Should I ever have to think about finding a parking lot for my new Porsche, I may  consider your guilt trip again.

Not too greedy at all, quite the opposite I think. Back home in Canada I can make around 6 times as much money. Save 6 times as much too. I come here to be a positive visitor to the people, have fun, and learn Chinese. My job is more 'cushy' in Canada than teaching here.

Also, we give up our fresh air, safer food, and safer streets, etc. I give up all the money I could be making back home to come here and be loved by the students and locals, but resented by half of the Chinese co-workers because 'we make more money than them'.

I think most foreigners are not greedy. The greedy ones don't come to China.

nevermind:

Sure pal.

They want foreigners to come work in China so they try to provide an equivalent lifestyle.

I don't think a typical westerner would leave their country to come work for 12 hours a day for 3000rmb to live in a dorm with 5 other people.
