Q: Are hickeys a status symbol?
I've been seeing so many full on hickeys of late, almost proudly shown to the world, that I'm wondering if there's some sort of 'status' associated with them now...
It could be 'in' thing. Plus, as we are now into Summer, it would be pretty difficult hiding something like a hickey.
First I saw Kindergarten's Chinese teacher with hickey, and few weeks later, kids in her class told me 'laucher will have baby'.
That's how the young couple proves their parents they are trying to make a baby.
Hickeys are actually physical marks of shame in China, whereas in the USA and most anglophone countries, they are indeed a boastful "status symbol" among teenagers, but not among people over the age of 70.
Where are you seeing so many "full-on hickeys" and within what age group? Are you posting from somewhere in China or... Tucson, Arizona? Maybe east London? Or Redfern in Sydney?

They used to mean you were involved with a girl. Could be a sign that you aren't gay!!
Other than that not sure. I did see a few hickey's lately. Can't remember when, but I did see someone have the hickey's on their neck(

Your comments indicate, you probably have hickey somewhere on your brain.
I was also surprised to see so many people exposing their hickeys until a friend told me that some of those could be part of TCM where the practitioner would squeeze the skin with their nails. I'm still not convinced though.

FTR, as a qualified TCM practitioner, even if pinching was a valid reason for such bruising, they will NOT be on the neck like that, nor with they be that damn big!!!
I thought the marks on necks was from really big mosquitos.
My ex-gf gave me a hickey very early on in our relationship. Her reasoning was that it was a sign to other girls that I was already spoken for. Thank goodness the current gf isn't quite so insecure about things
