I don't know about room-mates but this little emperor thing is certainly developing a generation of incredibly rude children. When these people grow into adults they are going to be somewhat shocked that not everyone thinks they are so cute.The parents really do them, or anyone else, any favours by raising really spoilt little brats.

I was teaching a private English class today at a Chinese friend's apartment and his daughter was part of the class. Firstly she treats it like playtime rather than study time, messing it up for everyone else. She then phones her other tutor and asks him to come over. He comes over and then asks her why she wants him over there and just got some feeble answer like she just wanted him there. He was non too pleased. I made her go into the other room and apologize to him for wasting his time. She then proceeds to disrupt my class again. I have now told her if she does it any more I will kick her out of the class and not teach her any longer. I will not put up with that level of rudeness.

I have met a lot of really nice Chinese in my time here but I also see a lot of truly ignorant, rude peasants. There are a lot of Chinese who seem to think the world is there for their convenience regardless how it affects others. If I had your friends problems and the room mates would not see reason I would simply start treating them the same, for instance when she is on the phone in the middle of the night either turn the music on really loud, or if that's not practical take the phone out of her hand and simply tell the caller to call back at a more sociable time and turn it off. I think she will start to get the message.
