Q: are the people in nanning really that good?

people in nanning were the best out of every city i've been to thus far.i'm basing this on my observations of how they deal with each other. (bonus i was not dtared at rudely, did not hear people people snickering at me) the conditions there are awful but i fell in love with nanning people

Crimo, now you do know why I decided to settle in Guangxi Province.  Nanning is still a small city by Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou standards, but it is also very dynamic and its people very nice.

THANKS !

I agree with the above. I have never resided in Nanning but I have visited it often.  I think that it has evolved considerably over the years, mostly for the better.  I often vacation in Guangxi Province and feel that somehow, somehow, it is the real China ... or at least the China that I somehow wanted to imagine in my dreams.  The countryside is really interesting and the locals are quite friendly.

Except for the mosquitoes, Nanning is just great.

my time there was short, it  rained every day. it was muddy. but the people were genuinely nice and gave me my space. i feel so awful though, i carried my "everyone is trying to cheat me" attitude i i feel really shatty for it. luckily i am quick to apologize. the city itself is dirty, at least where i stayed, but iwould look for a job in nanning and take less money just to experience the joy of being around good  people. my next visit, i will bring the right attitude "this is not like the rest of china"

Actually Nanning is one of the "hot spots" for ESL teachers in China these days who don't want Beijing nor Shanghai nor Guangzhou -- it's like Xiamen in Fujian -- it has an oversupply of foreign teachers compared to the number of open positions and as a result, wages are lower than in other parts of the country (same as in Xiamen).  The entire province is in demand these days and just look at Guilin and Yangshou the same.

But I never saw mud all over the place as the writer above writes.  May we can ask  Happy about that?

Some parts of the city, due to the high concentration of construction activity, is quite muddy or sandy, and when it rains, it all looks like "mud".  More towards city center or downtown, were is less construction activity, is cleaner.  At that is even with trucks up and down allo day and night brushing, washing and water blasting the dirt.
I guess it is one of the downfall of progress.

I felt the same way when I visited Guiyang.  Very good people there.  The best so far in China.

They will be friendly to you in Nanning and pretend to be your frineds only to wait for the right opportunity to steal as much from you as possible. By the way have you ever seen a person fron Nanning ever pay for their own beer.

HappyExPat:

Yes. most of my Expat friends will pay a round when we do get together, or split the bill at the end. Really wish "friendship" will not be measured by who pays for the beer. I must say that at least to those I do get together with, you must be fast on the draw in order to pay the bill.

I'm not sure about Nanning but as far as the nicest people I would have to say probably Hong Kong. People in Hong Kong are extremely nice and laid back. No pushing in line, no staring all around polite people.

I have been to alot of places in China and I would have to say all are about the same. I really enjoyed Dalian where the locals would actually ask me to sit and chat with me over some fresh tea

Great city to live, I have been living here almost one year now but have visited several times over the previous five years. Just got back from an eight day stay in Beijing and it really felt like coming home. Nice people, generally good weather, good expat community.

Be careful in Nanning. People will pretend to be your friends then rob you blind

HappyExPat:

Any coin will have two sides and an edge to fall back to when flipped. I just moved to a better apartment (besides 500 yuan/month cheaper) and bought a case of Harbin beer and placed in the fidge at the new apartment. My friends showed as they had free time, and helped me move without stealing or breaking anything, for one lousy case of beer. At the end, I still have 5 beers left. To me, that is Nanning.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
