Q: are plastic containers/bags used by food vendors safe?

Does anyone know if the people who sell street food etc use bags that are actually meant for food? It would be most of a concern when buying something steaming hot, and then the vendor throws it into a plastic bag, but also e.g. the styrofoam boxes used for takeout food.

Does any of these add any crap to what we eat ?

You are absolutely right! ANd yes it does! When you think about it do you actually think they take the time to clean those bags or do they just leave the food in there for days!

Yeah, I'm also worried about those bags they use for the food.

They even feel kind of funny... But man... there's just too many things to worry about.

If I keep worrying about food here, I will probably die of starvation cuz every day it seems like there are reports about food safety or some other thing:

KFC Chicken Scandal, Fake Eggs, Gutter Oil, etc.

Yes, it is a problem. The bags are not certified food safe. At best, they may contain pathogenic bacteria. At worst, they may leech carcinogenic plasticizers into the food. However, on a wider spectrum, I am not sure that the bags or the containers present the greatest risk where street vendors are concerned. I would be more worried about the source of the food and the subsequent storage. The personal hygiene of the street vendors themselves must also rate highly.

Yep. According to my wife's professor, when heated (ever buy hot food on the streets?), these plastic bags produce carcinogenic thingmabobs. It's all really sciency, and I almost punched the guy for being such a nerd, but apparently it's pretty dangerous.

One man was very anxious to get me into his shop, once inside he pointed vehemently at a faded picture of what looked like chicken. I got a styrofoam container with sweet and sour pork (I was really hoping it was chicken), by the time I got back to my apartment it had started to melt. Health be damned, stuff was tasty. Short story shorter: my hands are still sticky from when that man porked me.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
