I love saunas but I've been a little put off by stories from other expats here, telling me that they were cesspools, full of germs, rarely maintained, etc.
just wondering if there's any truth to that or was that just baseless China-bashing?

Sanitary is a realitive word in China. Let's just say they are as clean as the rest of China.
Just think of all the extra germs and creepy crawlies as good training for your body.
Or better yet, just don't look too close and don't think about them at all, and just enjoy the sauna.
Ok, let's think about, .... Place a bunch of basically naked men with a penchant for spitting and nose-picking in a small volume of water. Nope, sanitary is not the first word that springs to mind.

Don't forget about the coughing where they don't cover the mouth spreading germs.
one of my students had some problem with their eyes from swimming in the pool at gym, I think it was about the amount of cholrine dumped in. They do that so they dont have to replace the water so often. That was a swimming pool, I can only imagine a spa would be worse.
