Q: Are STD's a rampant problem in China?

Seeing as the news here is "harmonized", how widespread is it?
Are the locals even taught about these things?

I assume it's everywhere because people don't know much about it, therefore they don't know how to prevent it. Whoever is sleeping around in any country can't be careful enough, in my opinion.

I was once told by my students that only foriengers have disease.  If you stay away from foreingers you are "safe".  I often wonder, WHERE do they get this (mis)information!?

Back in my working girl days...I had a few 'femmes de noir' wrap it up before they smoked it, let alone poked it.

thedude:

You do realize that condoms will not protect you from many std's? Not that I speak from experience but you can never be too careful.

You can't really trust the official statistics provided by the Ministry of health as any other "scandal", STD, AIDS, etc are strictly kept under control.
Back in 2000, Wenlou was a famous village in China where AIDS was ramping throughout the village and the village isolated by the military.
Just be careful with yourself. Condoms can protect you but they are not 100% safe.
Western people often don't give a damn about it, because they believe they will be safe.
Chinese people often don't give a damn about it, because they are often not really informed about these kind of diseases (either at school or by their government).

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
