Q: Are there any ancient villages or interesting sites near Suzhou?

Somewhere scenic, interesting or historical that's suitable for a daytrip, and please don't say Shanghai or Hangzhou!

Have you been to Zhouzhuang?

It's pretty close to Suzhou (30km southeast) and it's an old water town (the Venice of China!)

Here's a link:

It's close and pretty cool. Kind of touristy in places, but cool temples and that "historic" feel. Worth a day trip.

Try Wuzhen, not far away from Suzhou.

Here is the Link http://baike.baidu.com/view/10390.htm

the back villages of Anji, outside of Hangzhou, where the movie about the crouching dragon / flying tiger was filmed .  It's bamboo country up there and the rural villages are a like a scene out of early 20th-century China.  Good food, too.

I am sure "LuZhi" is the ancient town actually located inside of Suzhou.  Can't be difficult to find.
