I have only traveled threw Kunming so never stayed overnight, but you can use hostelbookers or hostelworld, they have several listed there and read the reviews.

The hump is ok, as a bar/restaurant, but I've never stayed there.

If anyone is interested in staying at a hostel, Candy Inn is highly recommended. I stayed there last week.
