Q: Are there any places to avoid in the Beijing nightlife?

I am new here in Beijing, and since i dont really know anything about the city i would really like to hear if anyone out there could tell me a little bit about the nightlife scene in the city, and especially where to not go. At least from where i come from (germany) there are definitely places where you shouldnt come, so i would like to know that about beijing.

thanks alot!

There are many sleazy bars in the Sanlitun area that serve fake alcohol so I would stay away from them. In general, if there are people standing outside a bar trying to usher you in, it's going to be a crap place. Houhai also has a few of them. Excess use of neon lights, cheesy singers, and people trying to lure you in are sure signs of terrible bars. I would also recommend to stay away from big clubs like Babyface, Vics, Mix etc. because they are really racist towards Chinese and non-white people (if you're white they give you preferential treatment, but if you're any other skin colour they treat you like a piece of dirt) so don't support them. Plus, many of these clubs are totally seedy, with drug-taking going on in private VIP rooms, and many of the girls on the dancefloor are hired by the club to make it look full and they probably double up as prostitutes as well.

I agree with the previous answer. I recommend you to stay away from theses places full of prostitutes, drugs, and racist staff. You Might wanna try some chill out bars like D Lounge, PUNK, Stumble Inn in Sanlitun Village, Xiu Bar (several prostitutes but in a classy style I'd say), LAN Club! Be careful about Club where the crowd is mainly Chinese, some of them don't always have warm feelings for foreigners theses days...Hope those answers will help you

Over the past year there have been reports of violence against foreigners in the Sanlitun area, especially the seedy street by Tongli Studios and outside the clubs at Gongti. One guy even had a glass bottle thrown over his head and injured quite badly. It's thought that it was just a hate crime against foreigners. If you really want to stay out of trouble, don't hang out here on your own on a Saturday night and don't rub anyone up the wrong way.

For a safer nightlife option, why not try the many bars along Nanluoguxiang. Most of those bars are pretty chill and I've never heard of any fights or trouble there. Salud is probably the best one on the street, and a little up the road on Gulou Dongdaijie you'll find Amilal in a tiny, narrow hutong. You'll be safe there.

Below is an article about the violence in Sanlitun but it dates back to last year.

I've only been to Beijing a few times but one of the times I went to Houhai bar area by a lake. It was terrible.

First I ordered a White Russian and it came a in cup a little bigger than a shot glass. I left and went to anther place and they gave me fake Tsingtao beer, so I took the bottle and threw it on the floor. The funny thing is they didn't even get mad...

Anyway I really don't like that place so I wouldn't go there if I was you.

Hi !

Try to avoid Sanlitun after midnight and Gongti clubs (especially Mix club when you are only with non Chinese people). Vics is really nice if you have enough money to get a booth upstairs.

But if you are within a group of people (5-6), don t worry most of this jerks are easy to scare...

Just another advice, try to avoid drunk-fighting even if some of Chinese (and foreigners ....... ) have a total lack of respect towards other people...

Nevertheless, Beijing is a wonderful city and I hope you going to love it ! Smile

You should stay away from areas that have suspicious looking people. Not to long ago it was mentioned that there were crimes going on around the Sanlitun area so I guess not much has changed since. That area has a lot of foreigners and some are shady. I've seen some guys hanging out on the stairwell looked pretty suspicious to me. There are all types of people there. They don't really have much security around that area either so if you do go there try to stay around as much people as you can. Avoid the places that are not well lit and have suspicious looking people staring at you.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
