Q: are there any places where you hang out that feel normal?

the gym that I go to feels very very normal,I see the same people at the same time,we all greet each other, they take me for who Iam and never judge.

I remember a few places like that. There was one bar in Shizjiazhuang that I remember. That was a five years ago. Lots of foreigners. great bar. There were a few guys who could play instruments. I wish I could remember the name of the place. There was actually a place in Nanchong, Sichuan. Hard to believe, but the bar was more like an American bar in North Dakota. Both a mix of Western and Chinese music. My greatest memory was in Beihai. Guangxi. Every morning about 8 to 10 of us from Canada, US, Australia, Ireland, and Englane would go to McDonalds for breakfast. None of us were teachers at that time. most of us had Chinese wives. We would shoot the shit and tell jokes. I gues those are the places that I remember the most where I hung out in China that felt normal.

When I was in China I always felt comfortable in the gym too. Same with the badminton court and swimming pool I went to regularly.

I think the key is to find a place where you're doing what you enjoy and everyone else is there for the same reason and I think that breaks down a lot of barriers. Everyone has something in common .People tend to be in their happy place and are more interested in doing what they like than in being dicks to the random foreigner.

Hobbies are the key, if you can find a place with people who enjoy doing the same thing you also enjoy then you will feel at home. I remember when I started going to the gym 8 years ago, the only gym in my city at the time, my Chinese was absolute garbage and none of the regulars there spoke much English at all, yet everyone treated me normally and not like some abnormality, we trained together, gave each others advices on training using body language, I never felt I wasn't part of the place.

I live next to a very nice lake now and Iplay badminton with random people and regulars by the lake on Sunday morning, I feel extremely comfortable during that time because even though I am a foreigner no one cares, they just want to play badminton with someone, anyone.

It's more difficult to feel comfortable when walking around in public because not only we are different from other people but we don't have anything in common, we can't relate to each other. Like above poster said, when people have something to do they don't care about you, and having something in common breaks a lot of barriers.

I don't like gyms ... 'cause of the smell.

I can say, I dislike public toilets for the same reason. It's much 'cleaner'  in the bush or on 'mercedes' tire ... Porshe tires are cleaner, too.

German cars overall 'like' my lonely outdoor pee ...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
