Q: Are there any schools in Suzhou where foreigners can learn Mandarin?
I'm moving to Suzhou shortly and I would really like to learn the language whilst I'm there. Does anyone know of any schools/ language academies in the city where I can study? The only time I will be able to have classes is in the mornings or at the weekend.
I want to go to a school, rather than have a private tutor.
I'm guessing there maybe university courses, but that if there are, they will already have started and I wouldn't be able to enroll mid course. When I lived in Spain, I could only sign up in April for courses that started in September, if the situation is similar in Suzhou, I doubt it'll be possible. However, when I lived in London it was possible to sign up for courses all year round, all the way up to the day before the course started, so I have my fingers crossed.

I went to this school for a month. You can start anytime and they are flexible with your schedule, but I would look around at other options too. It is over-priced, and the teacher gets paid by how fast you progress, so I always felt rushed, and thought the teaching quality was not as good because of that.
Save some cash, and get better one on one teaching with a private tutor.
But each to their own.

Be careful of the school you go to if you find one!
Just like there are crap english schools, there are also crap mandarin schools. In Beijing, I went to one in 2010 which was good but expensive, and went to anther one in 2011 which was "reasonably priced" and completely worthless.

ps. University courses usually require that you be a full time university student to study there.... At least, that has been my experience.
I live in Suzhou and mornings are my only available time too.
They usually offer group rates for four or more students if you're looking to save some dough compared to the VIP rates. What is your level; beginner, intermediate, etc?
I'm looking to find a couple more intermediates for us to start up a new class.
If you don't know about Suzhou yet, most of the Mandarin schools are in an area called SIP because that's where most of us foreigners live.

The university i worked for promised Mandarin classes for all the foreigners, but then scheduled them at a time we were all in class teaching. We pointed that out, but were told that if we wanted to attend, we would have to change our class times, so it was our fault if we could not attend
