Q: Are there any special visa requirements if you do freelancing?
Is individual freelance journalism activity (i.e. exploring, photographing, talking to people, and then writing stories/ articles, which are subsequently sold abroad while you get remunerated on a foreign based bank account) considered "work", for which you need to obtain Z (or F) visa, or do you pass "under the legal radar", thus being legally possible to do this on a long term L visa, for example?
On the opposite side, what about selling stories/ articles to Chinese media outlets and being paid on a foreign based bank account?

You have NO chance of doing this kind of work legally.You need too work for a professional news agency,working under strict and controlled measures
Freelancing journalism is the same as working as a reporter, and for that you will need a
'j' or journalistic visa. If for less than one year it will be J-2, and more than one year will be a J-1. I would not try to do it under a F business visa, even if paid abroad.
