Q: Are there any video games based on Chinese mythology?

I was just curious. If there aren't any, would you play one if there was?

Most of the MMO games you find in China are based on Chinese mythology.  Many of them have been translated into English for western audiences and they are F2P (free to play) game models.  Examples:

9 Dragons, , Dynasty Warriors, Loong, Silk Road Online, Fantasy Westward Journey, Dragon Oath, Sangokushi Online, Zu Online, 12 Sky, Phoenix Dynasty, Tian Zi...

Many of the games are pretty similar - Kung Fu in Ancient China, elements of mythilogical monsters, and characters from traditional stories (Xuanyuan, Chiyou, CaoCao, etc.)

China has some really strict guidelines as to what acceptable game materials and content are, and games made in China for play in China have to either be educational or have some sort of "cultural significance".  Getting a western game to market here is harder than getting a movie in to theaters.  This is why there are so many games here built on novels or stories from China's past - it gets around that "cultural significance".

They're not bad games though, but they are geared toward Asian players (excluding the Japanese), which means that it's a lot of player vs. player combat at higher levels - the story lines just kind of disappear.  They're fun for a while, but as you progress it's kind of "spend money or you're severely limited", and they end up costing more than buying a DVD game in the US just to get a new weapon.

If you are a huge fan of WoW, these games will fall short, but they're free (for the most part) and you can have some fun with them.

I will say this though:  it's a great way to learn some Chinese.  Download one of the games IN CHINESE, get on the chat and type English.  Tell them you're a foreigner that needs help and you'll get a lot of friends quickly who will help you translate and do quests with you.  Many players are in "wangba" in 3rd tier cities and are really excited to speak with a foreigner.

The two I've played are an RPG Jade Empire as icerock mentioned above and the action games Dynasty Warriors series, mentioned by MrTibbles.  I enjoyed both.  There is also a strategy game Romance of the Three Kingdoms series by Koei (same as Dynasty Warriors).  I've never played it but it always looked interesting to me.

There's also a few video games which feature the wars with Genghis Khan's Mongolia, like the Total War series.
