Q: Are there Chinese film producers famous only outside China?
I'm not a big fan of the big film producers in China, like Zhang Yimou, who made 'Hero' or 'The Flowers of War'. Are there any good film producers whose films are actually banned in China but who are quite famous with the international public?

Yes, they're commonly referred to as Sixth Generation film producers.
Two most famous ones are probably Jia Zhangke and Lou Ye. They produce films often portraying the struggles of average Chinese, and most of their films have been, at one point or another, banned in China
