Q: Are there many companies offering Software Testing roles for white foreigners?

I'm looking to move from the UK to Shanghai in 2014 and was curious as to whether I would have any luck in finding a software testing role in this area. I am a native English speaker and have 2 years experience in the testing field. Any replies would be fantastic Smile

You will have a hard time competing with all the locals. Meaning that if you can land a job, it will be at local salary.

Just two years of experience doesn't make you stand out, not speaking Chinese makes you an "inconvenience" for a company, if they have a department of non-English speakers.

what means "software testing"?

I saw a lot of localization work in the software branch. But all the IT companies and stuff like this are based in Beijing and not in shanghai

Outside Shanghai, income for this kind of job is in 3000-5000 RMB/months. Unless you speak flawless Mandarin, they are unlikely to hire you. There is no shortage of young Chinese software engineer willing to work for that income.

No. Those jobs are reserved for the red/yellow and green variety of foreigner.

Errr, you are a boss of an IT shop. Between the guy that ask for more money and don't speak the language of 99.9999% of his/her work mates, and the one willing to work for cheap and speak the language, which one you pick ?

I'm guessing that doctorate of yours has 'Made in China' embossed on the back.

But in answer to your question, green, I would take the green foreigner, no matter what language he spoke or how much pay he demanded, hell, I don't even care if he doesn't know the first thing about software, I just want a green face to show off in my company.

Sometimes.  Check for medium size service companies that do localization.  Zhaopin is your friend.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
