Q: Are they wrapping trees in rope to keep them warm?

On my home yesterday there were a bunch of workers wrapping the trunks and main branches of a number of trees in rope. Is this to stop insects? (seems like it wouldn't), or to keep them warm. If it is to keep them warm I think it totally unfair that the government thinks it is cold enough to put coats on trees but not cold enough to turn on the heating!!

They just need keep people busy. If you are cold, means you have to buy more clothes and spend more for electricity. so this going back to govt pockets/accounts. Everyone busy, economy running, rope makers have a business and old people have a work as wearing a coat for tree.

They are preparing the trees to be moved to another location. The rope protects the bark of the tree during the move.

Here in town some of the treetrunks are painted white, about the lowest 1 meter or so, and some are wrapped in cloth, often golden. As the temperature never gets anywhere near freezing I can only think this is for decoration or traffic safety (the white painted trunks along an unlit road does make them more visible)

As you all know feet binding was very common in China until about 100 years ago. Since this act was outlawed the leaders thought that the people had to do something with their rope and with their time. So there were plenty of trees..... tree trunk binding!!!

They wrap trees with rope, because wild animals (during winter) munch on the trees outer layer.

'ni shi laowai'...all of you!

Vyborg:

That's right, especially those that don't really know how to park their car on the sidewalk and do not get help by some streetservant who is there only to compensate for the lack of driving skills are prone to rip off some bark.

Vyborg, that reminds me the logic in Chinese banks. the bank house staff is not there for help you and serve you. And the baoan, security man, old and no english talking, is there to help laowai to fill the forms.  baoan fill forms, bank staff just copy it.

It may seem that way, but trees don't generate any heat. Their insides will get just as cold as the outside. And other "coat'less" trees seem to do okay.

I don't know. Maybe it's all part of pollarding.

You can't heat trees with indoor heating??? Personally I have never seen this in China. But Chinese have all kinds of crazy ideas. Would like to know why they do this?

White-painted trunks = to protect from parasites/bugs/etc.

Tied down left and right = to be held up because they can't hold themselves up on their own. Yet.

Or, as the other dude says (CharlieB), to move them to another location.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
