Q: Are the times a~changing?

Just read Coininear's story about the guy getting reprimanded by his fellow Chinese for being rude and it got me to thinking what else might be changing. For example I haven't seen anyone wearing their pyjamas in the supermarket for ages. Also queue jumping seems to have lessened considerably since I got here. Is this a sign of western influence effecting social etiquette at play? Bit of a daft question in light of what's been happening in Hong Kong, but not the same subject and i've asked it now anyway, so.....

The fact that you haven't seen anything "Chinese" lately is because your retinas have burn damage from the MIL-on-the-crapper episode

mArtiAn:

They do still burn a little, I can't deny it.

Now that you say it I haven't seen kids or adults pissing and even less crapping in public places since ages too. I still see queue jumping but at least people try to be discreet, not super rudely oblivious like before. But I hear more unjustified rude comments about foreigners.

no pyjamas in supermarket ? hehe, do you go out ? Laughing out loud

mArtiAn:

I guess I don't shop as much as I did, but still, I'd expect to have seen one or two in the street. I used to love that, the piano player from the Boomtown Rats was thought outrageous for dressing in his pyjamas, out here old women were punk and didn't even know it.

Being civil is not a "Western influence", damn it, it's just people caring about the place they live in !

I don't see much pajamas where I live (mostly student dorms here...), but kids crapping on the pavement, littering and counter-way biking is increasing over the years.

mArtiAn:

Just rounding the corner to my tenth year here and have still yet to see man, woman or child taking a dump in the street. I'm beginning to think Guangxi was a good choice.

Maybe it depends on which part of China, yes... In Suzhou, I see people making their kids crap on the pavement or above a garbage can every time we go downtown. I never saw that when I was in Sichuan and Yunnan, nor in Vietnam or Cambodia.Sichuanese and Yunnanese were always quick to point at all the things different with the Northern parts of China. So maybe it's a North Asia thing ?

You should make a collection of 'babies dumping in trash cans' vids and put them together in a montage to the sound of Bombs Away by The Police. Probably get a bunch of hits on Youtube.

Well, I once considered this, but with the song "Wo men shi Zhong Guo Ren" that I once saw on Youtube, with footage from the Chinese Air Force.

On one hand I do notice people are better at letting others getting off public transport before barging in, and less queue jumping, as well as people more often clean up dog shit.

On the other, I think drivers have somehow become even worse and I see more people pissing/shitting in the streets and on public transport than before. Also more rude anti- foreigner comments.

All said above and assumed by you can be correct. Another explanation though could be that you are gettign more and more integrated into Chinese society.
I noticed that on myself. My job requires relatively frequent trips abroad. On my last trip I was scolded by a Westerner for my behaviour which I and my Chinese colleagues considered absolutelly normal - but on the second thought I realized the guy was correct when we apply European and not Chinese standards.
So depending on your wish in this particular aspect your current finding can make you either happy or allert Smile

Things are slowly getting better now. You can see changes from TV programs, the CCTV broadcast company keeps on broadcasting commonweal Ads every other 5~15 minutes, teaching people to behave more politely. Several months ago, before Xi Jin Ping  cracked down the corrupted CCTV  group, the commonweal ads are far less than you can see now.

China is changing.  A recent news article said what I have been thinking for awhile.  China is drifting quickly toward Maoism.  Xi has been instituting measures that will once again cause China to become more insular.  Education reform starting next year will de-emphasize the English language.  The blocking of western internet.  Certain documents stressing the return to traditional "Confucius" values.  It's a pattern that points to China's attitude that it wants to develop in it's own unique way.  This can't happen without a huge dose of Nationalism.  And these changes are happening quickly.  In my opinion, this time next year there will be a very different China.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
