Q: Are WeChat users outside of China subject to Chinese censorship?

So we all know that everything in China is censored: Weibo, WeChat etc. But since WeChat is trying to go global, does that mean a user in say, the US, is also subject to China's censor laws? How does that work?

Same infrastructure, same censorship. If they actually impose any censoring on e.g. two hicks in Alabama discussing which Bush is the worst, I cannot say.

which Bush is the worst?  I think it would be which Bush was better.  That's what hicks in Alabama would be discussing anyway...    (#//not that Obama is the shining example)

I think at the moment they are, but I feel like I read somewhere that they are trying to change it. They will struggle to make it big internationally if they don't get rid of censorship.

remember there being a lawsuit with 360.  (this other free program that chinese people all use, it's anti adaware or something like that)

Have you not read the installation dialog?

Every piece of Chinese software phones home. QQ has a remote haxor program built into it, and it's part of how the Chinese gain intelligence. Several other "free" pieces of software have it as well.

The bigger issue here is that you're being spied on.

Seriously, go install QQ for Android. Look at the app permission list. Realize that the actual computer software is 10x worse.

There is no censorship in China, the STFU Leader is God and we owe him our gratitude and thanks.

I think so, around June 4th it was impossible to use WeChat to communicate with people outside China.

There's no censorship per se going on on WeChat, maybe a case of regular political blockage but that's up to them to castrate their own development. but read what Hulk said carefully because that's how you are being actually buttraped.

Everything you say, record, shoot or write is put on record in the Tencent servers and freely at the disposal of the company and probably with oversight of people higher up, and this forever.

And we didn't even begin to mention the take over of your machine performed by every single piece of garbage software they put out, including QQ, WeChat, you name it.

Now, up to everyone to have a problem with that or not.
