I heard a somewhat crazy story from a friend back home who went to get an eye checkup. The ophthalmologist there told her that she often received offers from potential clients in Hong Kong - clients who lived in Shanghai and Beijing. They would offer him paid flights to Hong Kong, 5 star hotels paid for 2-3 days, etc. just to get eye surgery plus an immense compensation package.
Are Western doctors so prized in China? Is it for all branches of medicine?

I am not sure of what you refer as to "western" doctors. Are they Chinese nationals who studied medicine abroad, or foreigners who became doctors and are practicing in China ?.
For a foreigner to practice medicine in China, a lenghty and complicated procedure is required to get the authorization to practice medicine here.
For a Chinese national, who either studied abroad and returned to China to practice here, or graduated here and went abroad for further studies, the demand is quite high. Most Chinese do feel that "anything" foreigner is better than the just local counterpart. Thus, doctors with training overseas are "considered" to be better doctors, and can command higher fees for their services. My dentist went to dentist school in the States, and besides he is really good too. But he gets lots of clients, and charges as he pleases. And no one complains.

Hi Happy, Talking French surgeons here - eye specialists, etc. being flown to Hong Kong (ie. no need for a visa) and then those rich Chinese also flying to Hong Kong to get those operations, paying the flight first class, hotel 5 stars, etc. etc. etc. just for a weekend.
