I recently got a new puppy, and it's only when I tried to hunt down some dogfood that I realized how 'mafan' that was going to be. I did at least 4 medium to large sized Chinese supermarkets, and none, no exception, had pet food.
What gives? More and more Chinese people have pets, why is it so hard to find pet food?
When I had a dog I either got my dog food from pet stores, or ordered it off of the internet.
The only place I saw pet food was at Walmart. I assume many people don't feed their dogs pet food. Some people just root through the trash for old bread. If you can't find any stores that have it, you probably are better off ordering it online. I know that if I had a dog in China, I would, because even though the dog foods I found were name brand, most are crap for your dog anyway.
I have a rabbit and supermarkets never sell rabbit food, however, at least in Beijing there are many pet stores that are way cheaper than any supermarket when comparing dog food or cat sand prices. So I guess you best option is to look for a pet store or buy it in taobao!
There's actually a Royal Canin store on (I think) Dongsishittiao.
Absolutely not! I mean you can buy pet food for cheap -and good- at any of those big markets -where incidently you can buy kitchenware, clothes, home appliances, etc...-.
There is a good pet food shop on the side of the Tuanjiehu market...
Most Chinese people I know just feed their pets table scraps. Makes sense to me.
i live in bao an, there is a massive metro wholesalers (bit like makro, costco) in qian jin er lu. we get loads of good western stuff there even newcastle broon ale, decent bacon, loads of cheeses etc i think this is a good bet, next time i'm in i'll look
Some of the bigger Vanguard shops have Pedigree Chum and the biscuit/kibble stuff
From what I can see, and asking amongst my Chinese friends the very idea of buying pre-made pet food is seen as ridiculous, they all either give their pets scraps from their own meals (mainly pet dogs) or buy the fresh ingredients and make up a meal from scratch (no pun intended).

...and from what I can see most dogs owned by locals have poor fur, teeth looks bad etc.

I've seen a couple of mangy looking dogs, usually in the less salubrious areas, but round the better areas where Pekinese and Chihuahua dogs are popular (certainly in my apartment complex) the dogs all seem very well cared for.
our vet has a couple of imported brands of dog food. also there is a dog kennel near to our home where we park the dog when we need to leave town, they also have dog food.
You can also find several brands on taobao. Be aware of fake products, the story I heard about Royal Canine dog food was that the faked version took a very little amount to kill a dog.
Try ordering it from taoao or looking for small pet stores in your neighborhood.
Why don't you feed your puppy chickens heads and feet? they are really cheap and available in the market. But in two months your puppy will become fat as a pig lol.
