Q: Are you dating or married to a local celebrity?

Every time I go out with my gf someone in town recognizes her.  "I saw you on t.v.," say some locals.  Also, before I get to her house there is an interview or a film crew following her.  She is even a circuit speaker around town.  I do not care, but we do have to change plans because of this.

1:  Have you ever seen one of those modeling reality shows? 95% of models are gross = Not brag worthy.

2:  In China I think most people would agree that close to 80% of models, tv personalities, actresses are hookers.  So if you feel proud that your gf is getting tag teamed for a chance at a 5000 yuan photo shoot , up to you but = not brag worthy

3: You sound like a moron.

flyingheart:

Mike, I don't think this dude is bragging about his gf...99.99% of the celebrities are not worth our time to talk about them. I think he's afraid that his gf might play him around and dump him one day because she's famous.

To juanisaac: I strongly recommend you The Vow. It's a book/movie telling of how a couple had a car accident and worked together to their fame in the US and around the world.

@ Flyingheart,    I love the comment you made that "99 % of the celebrities are not even worth our time to talk about them."

That is so true!  It was what I was getting at in my post below, that "everything is famous" in China.  So all this craze about celebrities is totally unimpressive.  I have never been a celebrity enthusiast though, and can barely remember Hollywood names even.  So that may also be a factor for me.

On the side note, I remember China smack posting a series of videos about some white guy, with a fake security entourage, claiming to be Roger Federer xD   The guy was clearly in his early twenties, and his physical build wasn't even as impressive as a tennis player's.  All he did was don a pair of shades, and a fake, foreign security entourage that was sorta his same age.  And he had MAD FANS mobbing him

@flying , although you make great points i think that in this case, he was very clearly trying to brag.  This is definitely classed as a "humblebrag" . Where you want to brag, but at the same time  act like its nothing to you to hide your brag. Haha , i think bragging is totally fine. Do what makes you happy.   Its just that it seems very strange to me to brag about  being with guo mei mei  or something like that.

If you dating a hot doctor, brag away. Good for you.  There few countries where modeling doesnt = part time hooker. And china is not one of them. So to brag about it seems off.

You know why I said this guy isn't bragging about his gf? Note his last sentence...change plans....see?  This suggests that he lacks securities.  BTW, I'm very interested in psychology and have a keen sense of the way people do or say things...

@flying, haha again good point, and i really like your style. But i still see it as bragging, even that part. I picture it as hes trying to make it seem like a movie star paparazzi thing, where they need to go through back entrances because his gf is so special.

if hes seeing it truly as a negative, you might be right. But I see it as a true humblebrag. Add negative points to make you seem more humble.

Kind of like if someone sais " yeah i just had lunch with  章子怡 , shes a really bad cook! "     1: that guy probably doesnt think shes a bad cook but he wants to say indirectly that she cooked for him ( or he has to change his plans because shes such a star)  2:  by adding any negative point, it makes it less of a direct brag, and less likely to be attacked.

haha I think we are analyzing this too much.

There's too many famous people in China, even the national stars. There's so many that you can't even remember them.  For somebody that is only locally famous, that is not enough to be really impressive.  The real impressive feat is if you're dating somebody with a national fanbase that gets camera attention even when they're outside of town.   Another dent in the shock factor is that as a foreigner, you could be just as famous as she is, easily. Just get a show on the local TV station discussing news topics , culture, or English.  Yeah sure, you'll be locally famous too....

Every time my GF takes me out to eat, she takes me to a famous restaurant that seems quite normal to me.  I told her next time I treat her, I'm taking her to a "world famous" burger restaurant.  She'll realize the satire of my remark when we end up walking into a Mc Donalds.  xD   In short, it seems everything and every place is famous in China.  Famous is a word thrown around just as often as they say the  word "delicious."

DrMonkey:

The words "very delicious", to be accurate. Nothing is merely "delicious" in China, it's always "very delicious".

Touche Dr. Monkey!  The mistake of me missing the "very" is almost like like missing the "Dr." in your name and calling you "Mr. Monkey" instead.  Won't happen again!

Once a friend of my wife's tried to gain face by telling me her boyfriend is a professor "at Famous University", with capitalizations like that. I just asked her: "So, he goes to F.U.?" Later that F.U. professor tried to hit on my wife, and argued with his GF in public.

The term FAMOUS carries a very different meaning in China, where everyone is focused on saving face as an anti-bullying survival skill. Be cautious around people who use "famous" too often, or too many appeals to authority/legitimacy/importance. Too0 much focus on mianzi/face. They have "long toes", as we'd say in Holland. Easy to step on them, and hurt their feelings.

flyingheart:

Ordinary people can have long toes, too...

My wife is married to a local celeb..... me !!!!!!

Wow, for example, tonight I took our daughter out to play at making bubbles. Within 15 minutes we had an audience of about 25 locals watching. My bubbles must have been impressive because most of the audience were in awe with mouths agape. Their stunned silence was such that I could hear my bubbles "pop".

My wife does not mind though. Not much chance of some super rich connected business man whipping me away and setting me up as his sexual plaything in a penthouse apartment  next door to the Golf club.... is there?

Thinking about it..... what would I do for a Merc ?  Nah.

Local celebrity?

…who cares about local? If you're going to humblebrag, she should at least be National/international.

No, not a LOCAL celebrity.

ScotsAlan:

Maybe she is the girl on the gangplank having footballs kicked at her on CCTV5 tonight.
