we usually get 7 hours of sleep,it seems still not enough, especially in Winter.
What about you guys?
6-7 hours sleep is enough for a normal healthy grown up person. If you are still feeling sleepy then consider getting some exercise, eat more fruit or whatever health tips you want to believe in.
also, a regular sleep pattern makes it easier to feel fully rested when you wake up
It will also depend on how much you are used to sleeping. If you have been sleeping 9 hours for most of your life, getting to 7 hours will not be fun

Good advice, also i hve read somewhere that an 8 hour sleep is not as good as an 8 hour sleep if you go to bed later. You need to go to bed ealrier than later......easier said than done.

I do agree with you,Junglelife ,it's better to sleep earlier than later.we usually go to bed like 12:30 or 1 am which is pretty late, so,from now on,we are going to try going to bed before 12:00.

there is an added bonus in going to bed early. If you get up equally early, then going out into the world is more peaceful, less people, less noise, empty seats on the bus etc.
I have suffered from sleep paralysis and nightmares since I was very young. Waking up is a struggle and an escape every day for me.
It seems that getting out of bed is just as hard after a 6 hour sleep, or a 10 hour sleep. I sleep like shit in China, sleep a little better in Canada.
I think the 'especially in winter' bit may actually be the key problem, Maggie. Sunlight deprivation can be a real pain in the arse, and make you feel tired and lethargic even if you're sleeping enough.
The (one) incredibly cold winter I spent in China, I always felt tired.... until we bought some multivitamin tablets which obviously contained whatever it was I was missing and they helped a lot.

Yes. I found the supermarkets in China to be stocked very seasonally, which was in its way a good thing, but I did find that in the dead of winter I was missing a lot of foods that give key nutrients. Obviously vitamin D is the most obvious and important one, but I'm sure it wasn't the only vitamin/mineral deficiency I had.

sunlight matters. but the south of China hardly sees any difference between winter and summer wrt sunlight

It's the beds, honest. many years ago I read where the experts said that a hard, firm bed was the best for your back and your posture and for a good sleep. As the years passed my choice in beds got fluffier and the experts all now agree that a bed that fits the contours of the body and is reasonably soft is much better for you. One thing I did change some years ago was my penny pinching habit of buying cheapish mattresses. I now buy the best regardless of price because I figure I'm going to spend almost a third of my life in a bed. Sigh...then I moved to China. Oh my sainted aunt! Brick mattresses! Who thought that one up? I slept so badly and woke with so many bodily aches that I basically demanded that the school I work for do something about it, which they did. So I have 4 inches of foam and one of those woolly sheep covers but I still sleep badly. I have come to the conclusion that sleeping alone is the major issue. So my next step towards improved nocturnal unconsciousness will be to find a lovely lady to share the bed. I am hoping that works.
Seriously, the amount of sleep you need depends on what you have been used to getting. And another thing, although I laughed at this when I first was in China I now find myself a keen advocate of the midday siesta the natives all have. ZZZZZZZZZZ

Those beds are killer. They helped me put some blankets on the bed but it still felt too hard. I never got used to it. If you think it was uncomfortable for you, try having curves! A hard bed can be torture.

However, why not invest in a western mattress, they aren't THAT expensive (our 2m one was 4k RMB) and if you're going to stay in China for a while surely it's worth the money?
I found most of the beds in China too hard. I put 2 comforters on my bed under the sheets which made the bed tolerable. When I sleep on a hard bed my hips hurt. I've always been a night owl. I don't go to sleep until I'm ready to drop. If I'm working on something, like when I built my house,I often can't stop working. I'll stay out all night, Same if I'm having fun. I developed over the high end scale sleep apnea (quit breathing), which means when I sleep, I don't sleep for more than 2 minutes at a time. I was dead all day. I have a CPAP machine. Last time I was in China I lost a part and couldn't get a replacement for 3 months. It didn't bother me. I slept pretty well in China, but I had exercise before bed, actually in bed until I was ready for sleep. I never had severe head aches which I get from oxygen deprivation because I quit breathing when I sleep. In theory I can just stop breathing and die without CPAP. I think an activity before sleep helps. If I was to die in my sleep in China, I want to have a smile on my face. )
The beds in China just don't seem to be made for expat bodies. My wife always insisted on having one of those beds that felt like a plank of plywood covered in a thin sheet of padding.
The moment I moved back to the US I bought a high quality pillow top mattress. The first night my wife said, "Oh, this is WAY too soft. I will never be able to sleep well on this and my back will kill me in the morning."
After she woke up from 11 hours of uninterrupted sleep and feeling better than she has in years, she looked over at my smiling face and said, "Shut up. Just, shut up."
When she returned to China she immediately threw out her Chinese mattress and bought the same one I have.

A link between dementia and alzheimers and REM sleep would seem to me to be common sense, but I wonder why it took so long to prove it.
Everybody get a good night sleep unless you want to forget things in your life, for some people, this might be a benefit.
