I'm deleting my account immediately if it starts charging for voice and text msgs. F that!

Depends on the fee but I seriously doubt anything will happen as the backlash would be massive. The only real recourse the telecoms have is to charge more for data plans.
For those that didn't know like me until now...here is a link.

No. Plenty of alternatives, and I want simple messaging. I cannot really use hard to understand audio messages recorded in a noisy place for anything.
Of course I won't. There will be 20 Wechat copies that pop up the next day to replace it if it goes Pay per message
can sb please explain to me what is so special about wechat?
Scandinavian:
nothing, it is just like QQ, an app that is getting so crammed with useless features until it will not be usable anymore. It has no distinct features that you cannot do with many other apps
well, wechat needs an income source. not many people/companies like working for free. they just need to be sly about it... like have the telecom provider give them a cut everytime someone uses their service which uses the telecom providers service. which I imagine they already do. but to start billing users directly would lose them many users.
some people pay for vpn's, some people expect to get them for free. wechat cannot even offer hi-end service to justify charging. voice messages? lotsa people don't even like voice messaging.
Who in their right mind would pay for it?
People would probably go back to QQ, since it's pretty much the exact same thing, but still free.
This would be the almost immediate death of Wechat.
I know I wouldn't pay, especially when I can just send text messages with the same amount of effort and without having to be next to a wi-fi spot...
It's not difficult to crack any software in the world.
Whatsapp is talking about becoming subscription based too.

I would not pay for that. I barely use wechat as it is. And like others have mentioned, plenty of free alternatives there, the first being qq.
No... If WeChat decides to start charging people will stop using it. There are other alternatives (and free).
But if that were to happen, QQ does the exact same thing as WeChat... And there's still Skype.
Absolutely not!
It is only popular because it is free. Now that they have so many users they believe they are indispensable but... We have all seen this happen before and we know the result will be the same. We will find a new chat forum as we did when we first found WeChat.
even whats app cost like 99c to buy not sure why its free in china, the should prob try using advertisement as a form of income cos they will lose a lot of customers, bbm is very popular in england and comes as a pack with your monthly contract, with unlimited data
