Q: Are you a member of any expat club or organization?

Have you joined any expat associations since you arrived to China?

Or do you think that is not necessary?

I haven't tried to join any expat club because I already knew some people in Beijing, plus I met more people during my mandarin course, but I am wondering if it could be useful/interesting.

no, why? I mean, just because you are from "not-China" doesn't mean you would have anything in common.

does this forum count ?

I joined the Hash House Harriers when I was in Guangzhou some years ago. Great way of having fun and meeting people.

my advice is to not join any organizations or associations. if a member of the organization does sth stupid you as a member can get pinched. remember this is a post terrorism world. that means new methods of control.

I'm actually trying to join a sports team. Some guys wanted to play basketball, but I don't want to pay to play. I did join my local gym and I've recently been attending the bike classes regularly. I'm about to join the combat class that they offer pretty soon.

TedDBayer:

You couldn't join an expat club though, unless they took you in as their token Chinese member.

No, I didn't come to China to live in 'little England'. I have traveled all over the world so far in my life and I have always frowned on those who live in 'expat communities'.

I live, work and play amongst the local community, but then I married a local.

I don't belong to an official club or anything like that, but since coming to Nanning I have met a lot of people who are now friends and we regularly hang out together. I come from the UK and I have good friends here from the UK, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Holland. I also have some Chinese friends, but it is a different kind of friendship, simply because the cultural references are not always there. It is not as Hugh said living in an expat community, it is just relating to people I like regardless of where they are from.

I have a profile at internations.org, I can send an invite to anyone interested.

Expat clubs are mostly for people who want to network or dine somewhere upscale, although some events are fun.

No, just cause they are foreign doesn't mean I'll like them. I like guys that are funny and women that have small butts.

A:Well, doing a medical exam ahead of time wasn't actually necessary. I signed a promissary note stating that I was in good health and would do the result once I arrived in China. This was enough. -- norninman
