Q: Are Z Visas dated for the day you start work...

or just your end/expiration date? For instance, if my contract date is Sept 1 to start work, but I want to come 2 weeks early, will I be able to do that on a z visa, or do i need a tourist visa for those 2 weeks?

From the date you arrive in China. The dates on the visa itself are the issue date and the date that you must use the visa to enter China. It does not matter when your work contract starts.

The dates on your Z visa begin when it is issued, and ends 3 months later, so don't get your Z visa more than 3 months before you want to go to China. You can enter China anytime within those 3 months. Within a month of when you arrive in China, you must go to the police station and get your residence permit, which is valid for one year. Once you have the residence permit, you can travel anywhere you want, even in and out of China, without a problem. A Z visa is only valid for one entry. So if you want to travel out of China while you are there, wait until you have your residence permit. I hope that helps.

Often your initial visa isnt the important thing, but your residence permit. Thats handled through your employer. They may choose to buy any amount of time. The longest being for one year.
