Depends what you're after. I'll break it down into 3 key areas for you:-

1) Gulou/Houhai (my fave) lots of little chilled out quirky little bars where you can have a good chat amid the hutong setting. Houhai gets a bit mental at night with all the loud music though you can still find a quiet spot to have a good drink away from the crowds.

2) Wudaokou - Student area, lots of cheap/fun bars where you can go crazy. Lush/Pyro Pizza have some cool events and the beer is cheap though the area in general is often pretty packed.

3) Sanlitun -Avoid like the plague on Friday/Saturday night, though there are in fact some nice little gems of bars (Fubar) to be found amid the messiness. The area is great if you're after a proper dance club with DJs and all that jazz, though the crowd can get a bit undesirable at times.

There are of course bars and clubs scattered around the city and if I've missed out anything at all someone please say! My favorite bar in Beijing has to be 24 Sqm on Nanluoguxiang!

This.

Perfect.

And yeah, avoid Sanlitun. It used to be nice, but now it's the worst place in town.

I found that the hutong places were really nice. They have that river running and there are a lot of people walking the streets. You can walk along the hutong and stop in a restaurant they also have restaurants with live bands.

That place and if you like shopping malls you could go to Joy City at Xidan. Also, check out the Indigo mall!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
