Q: Asking about salary expectations during interview?
I don't understand why during the three job interviews I have had with Chinese employers, they always asked me what my salary expectations were, only to tell me right after, "Oh, we only offer this."
Is it because they hope I'm going to give a low number so they don't have to pay higher? It's already an uncomfortable question, so why ask it if the number is already set. Why not just tell me outright, "this is what we offer."

Because your answer will tell them if you will be satisfied at the new job or no. They also like to show you, they have 'upper hand' in deal, when they offer you lower salary than you expect.
You could also not answer them about your expectations. You can reply to them, you will accept what they are offering, so they won't know, what do you really want.
Last year I was working at Middle School in Tianjin. Principal of the School set me up with extra work to teach English to employees of Tourist Agency in the City. He told representative of Tourist Agency, I will teach them for prefixed amount.
After my first class, I ask rep about my pay. When she told me Principal promised her, I will teach for prefixed amount, I told her my pay is 20% higher. I get paid asking price.
They're just testing the water with you, I guess. Depending on the school and its location there is usually room for negotiation.

So far..in my last two jobs..my salary is being fixed in an informal interview...in which they explained how much i can spend on eating..how much on travelling..etc.,how much i can save..and after explaining all these things they gave me a conclusion that this will be suitable to live in China..i.e.salary.
