Q: Asking a friend of a friend for a job?

When you are looking for a job in China, is it rude to plainly ask someone whether their company is hiring when you first meet them (through someone else)?

I know this may seem a little bit unorthodox by  European standards too, but I feel like if you are relatively young (aka everyone in the same boat in terms of employment, experience, level of desperation), and your friend introduces you to a friend who works somewhere, it seems generally acceptable to ask about jobs...

What do you think?

I say go for it. If the company i worked at was hiring and someone i had just been intruduced to asked about it, i wouldnt think twice. A reference is different , but do what you gotta do. A mans gotta eat!

expatlife26:

oh totally, i wouldn't think it was rude at all.

Especially if it's something in your field you know?

Your company is looking for an accountant...and you meet an accountant looking for work...you think anyone is going to say "oh my how terribly improper!"

That would be fine in Europe too, no ? I've seen that in Europe and in China too. Of course, there's a difference between asking an information and begging for something ^^ Go for it.

Oh yeah I wouldn't hesitate to ask that. Worst case they say no and you're no worse off than before.

Shouldn't be a problem as others say, although you might want to check with your friend first. Just in case somehow the person you are asking "owes" your friend something and it becomes a favor.

Just do not worry about the face. Go ask for it. Nothing wrong to ask honest questions.
