Q: Authenticity Lesson for Wumao

I feel a little sad for our basement-dwelling friends. They try so earnestly to be foreign, while struggling with word quotas, a very poor rate of pay, and social and mental retardation. Possibly as a result of the latter, they never seem to learn. Even since the glory days of Silva, wumaos have not cottoned on to the basic elements of style that are necessary when posing as a foreigner.

This article tries to address the most immediate issues that wumaos need to consider. This forum, and the world in general, deserves a higher standard of paid nationalist drones. Time will tell if my efforts pay off.

1. Introducing Yourself

If your username contains a Western name or other indicator of Western-ness, and your first few posts namedrop Western themes (like tampons, blonde hair, or being from America or “Europe”) you have already marked yourself as an imposter. Don’t do it. Introduce yourself innocuously by answering questions (see below). If your first post says “As a blonde European girl, where can I find tampons?”, you’re gone.

2. Fitting In
Regular posters have a comparatively large number of answers posted compared to questions posted (they have a comparatively large something else too - don’t be embarrassed, it’s genetic). This is because their primary interest is participating in discussions, rather than drawing attention to their foreign cred.

The question-to-answer ratio of normal users is usually around 1:20 (ranging anywhere up to 1:100).

The question-to-answer ratio of trolls (uniqlo), retarded children (Vicky) and wumaos (GarrettAbbott) is usually about 1:3.

Posting numerous topics mentioning that you are "American" immediately marks you as Chinese. I, for example, didn't start out by posting "As an Australian foreigner in China, where can I find a shrimp to chuck on the barbie?" To be accepted as a legitimate poster, you need to tone down the claims of foreignness, and instead participate in conversations and express opinions (uh oh). This is where you will run into real difficulty.

3. Personality
This is the most serious (possibly insurmountable) obstacle you face when passing yourself off as “foreign”. You don’t have a personality. Expats have loads of experience, which they have subsumed into their sense of self. As such they express independent opinions, based on confidently and autonomously interpreting the world. It is impossible to imitate personality by reciting what you think are "regular" Western opinions. Western opinions are individualistic, nuanced and diverse, as opposed to prescribed by groupthink.

4. Lingo
Do not attempt to use American, Australian, or any other regional colloquialisms. It’s a dead giveaway. Colloquialisms are only used in verbal communication, and appear very awkward in writing. On an internet forum, a true blue fair dinkum Aussie like me only uses Australian lingo in a comical, self-referential way (drawing attention to the obviously silly words themselves). If I slip an Australianism into a sentence, it is a joke. It is not how Australians actually communicate in writing.

You can’t use colloquialisms to blend in. Whatever your wumao trainer told you about “establishing Western credibility on an internet forum” is bullshit. Punch him in the dick.

In fact - the belief that regional words are enough to confuse a foreigner absolutely typifies Chinese nationalists' utter lack of awareness.

5. Consider your End Goal
Is the entire purpose of this elaborate setup to eventually be accepted as an authentic foreigner and then start posting pro-Chinese topics, as though your foreign credibility will make people accept them? Once you are accepted as legit (though curiously devoid of personality), do you think people will value and respect your opinions?

Bad news.

The moment you start spouting pro-China bullshit, you’re gone. It was all for naught. The whole setup falls apart the moment you express a stupid, nationalistic opinion.

Unlike Chinese people (who assess the validity of an opinion on the person's race) we "foreigners" assess the validity of an opinion on the opinion itself. This is because we have the capacity for analysis, and are not constrained by national and ethnic loyalty.

Your idea that "foreign" people favour foreign opinions is based on the assumption that foreigners are a self-identifying group consisting of 80% of the world's population, unified by not being Chinese. Sigh.

Long story short - You will NEVER convince an expat of any of your government's Communist nonsense. Because we live here and can see things with our eyes. So, like, bye?

I am from England. It's a beautiful city. There has lots of delicious things to eat. I carry an umbrella even when it's not raining, always talk about the weather and like to make a garden because my teacher told me all us English do this. I also likes Mr Bean. I am so happy because Xi jinping came to see my Elizabeth Queen and brought many new ideas.

I have lived in China for many years. It is so great! The air is so clean and the people so friendly. The government lets me see many informations on the internet. I am so glad.

Bob's my uncle, job's a gud'un, tally ho, bottoms up old chap.

Haha, good one. You know I noticed the other day that "Nice Brice" has more questions than answers or close to it.

I think in the end though the Wumao program doesn't care if we believe it or not. It's just like with our buddy CFTU guy it's not about convincing us that the scam is real (because we can plainly see that it's not) it's just about creating the illusion that there are two sides for some kind of outside observer.

The fear is that if there is a space which is full of opinions you don't like which goes completely unchallenged that it will seem to outsiders that the accepted truth is what you don't want them to think.

As long as there are a couple voices saying what you want to be the truth, even if they are clearly inorganic, it still psychologically feels like it's a debate and not a settled issue.

It's like what sorrell said too about how they instantly get butthurt if somebody challenges them. They don't have time to do anything else...their only play is to get angry immediately which again gives the illusion of a lively debate.

"Clearly if people feel so strongly that China has the most orderly traffic in the world it must be true!"

Anyway, I think the whole program is just about making sure that negative views never get to go completely unopposed. As well as just getting the "right" opinion out there in the world so at least people know what they should be saying if somebody important asks them.

People can't toe the party line and be sycophants if they aren't sure what the line is. By having obvious wumaos it lets them explain the correct opinions without having to issue official thought police press releases that would make them look stupid.

RiriRiri:

Exactly. I've seen it happen in completely unrelated issue where a false perception has been artificially created on a specific topic, then goes on the news and unspecialized journalists just forge their opinion upon Google searches and go on with that perception.

It works. When done properly.

Yea, even for me it was useful to know the politically correct thing to say when I was asked something about China and had to give a socially acceptable answer- the people here are so friendly and welcoming after all to their foreign friends. Of course the pollution is a problem but London and Los Angeles used to be polluted too! It's so exciting to live in China with its rapid development and improving quality of life. I have made so many Chinese friends. We often go out to eat together and sing in a KTV. It's a shame when foreigners come here and don't learn Chinese and adopt Chinese mannerisms. After all, China is so welcoming to people from around the world. Oh and there are so many kinds of delicious Chinese food. It really is the best food in the world. I especially like hot pot, BBQ, dumplings and fried rice. There are so many beautiful places to visit in China from modern cities to quaint villages. What a beautiful country! Thank you China for welcoming me and reminding me that I am your FOREIGN friend.

Wumaos used to be mostly freelancing students and now probably are young English graduates, probably very average since I'm sure there are better jobs available to the good ones.

My point is they're not going to get better, they're probably not going away since I'm sure some post-it somewhere says there must be quotas, and lastly they probably won't ever listen to sound advices anyway. Let's just keep having fun pushing them to their Peter Principle.

No one can be convincing while spouting pro-CC crap. Even ScotsAlan, whom I don't doubt the identity, couldn't handle this amount of cognitive dissonance. Even pro-alternative media like RT or Al-jazeera eventually gave-up inviting mainland commentators for their shows. There's simply nothing to say and no one with enough competence to distort reality in a convincing manner.

expatlife26:

yeah, definitely not the best and the brightest.

I really don't think they care or are under the illusion they are convincing anyone.

You've, in a way, posed a problem here. You mentioned RT and Al Jazeera, I presume thinking that they are BS media sources.

But... who then is one to look to for 'good' news? And, by 'good', I mean relatively unbiased? or, at the very least, willing to look at the other side? Cos the mainstream media isn't going to touch anything politically insensitive!

We know how much the Saudi royal family has been doing bitchy things for decades, but the US government supports them. They've been funding ISIS... but you won't find a mainstream media group that will go into such things.

GitMo is something that should not exist. It breaks so many rules, violates so many agreements - but Kim Kardashian's butt is more news-worthy....

8 years 14 weeks ago

RiriRiri:

What I think about RT or Al Jazeera isn't really relevant, I was just trying to say that since they're trying to introduce an alternative narrative to other medias, they often give the mic to people you wouldn't hear elsewhere. I would talk about CCTV9 but they're not really trying to go offensive on the global media war. And they're just so surreal...

Anyway, a few years ago both RT and AJ tried to throw some CCP mouthpieces onto relatively safe debates, but they ended up just being so bad at making sense of anything, just reciting the usual talk points one after the other that nowadays when they need something said about China they just get some non-chinese "experts" with half a clue.

I think all global news channels won't really inform you but push their agendas forward. Which is normal.

Now more and more small media outlets are growing on the internet trying to gather genuine alternative information or pushing forward what other medias intentionnally overlook. Look for yourself they're not too hard to find.

8 years 14 weeks ago

expatlife26:

I think of Al Jazeera as being biased but no more so than say...fox news or huffington on the other sides are.

Where RT is think of as mostly nonsense.

Like your average AJ story is going to be something that actually happened with whatever political slant they want to put on it same as other news outlets.

where RT will just make things up out of whole cloth...a step beyond just the huffingtons and fox news's do in terms of irrespectability.

I could be totally wrong though, i'm not a media expert and those are just my opinions.  Feel free to tell me i'm dead wrong on both counts.

I dunno, news by itself is so full of bias it's really hard to find anything objective. Best thing to do is read stuff from lots of different sources and try and pick out the facts to make your own conclusions.

8 years 14 weeks ago

RiriRiri:

I'm not really a supporter of RT but I can't really remember where they made stuff up. Not saying they didn't but they're usually prudent since they're under more scrutiny and seem to me they're actually aware the Internet exists. Fox and the like could use a little update on their strategy.

And yeah, I agree with you on trying to get as much info from different sources, but most peole don't have time so there are new media trying to do just that. I don't know in the US but in Europe they grow like mushrooms.

I can 'see' some 'US Zeldas' posting at eChina, beside China-man Zeldas.

Ruski have apparently very strong 'Zeldas army', working the Internet, however that info came from Western/US press, what I take it as 'see-ee....we (US) don't do that, but Vlad is very bad....'.

There're few ''US Zelda's" posts from 'First Look' (today's The Intercept) on me 'Up-yours' threads here.

As you can see from the comments, they need a lot more help.

http://news.yahoo.com/china-missing-hk-book-publisher-confesses-hit-run-...

Also they might get better as China's economy shrinks. International trade job market is drying up. Although many or even most companies hire people with low English levels to deal with overseas buyers, they will most likely be the last to go. They got their jobs through connections. And China will not change their 'traditional' business culture.

Let me clarify, I think their English level will improve but logic ... nope.

Does labeling of other posters with 'mu-wao' makes you less suspicious?

Why in the whole anon world you picked handle 'expatlife' for posting on this website?

Are you implying, we're all the same 'sufferers' in China, 'cause in real you aren't suffering, but your 'blow-job' is monitoring of this website?

With all lengthy replies and comments in proper Englo?

Maybe not, just 'cause as a trader, I'm use to short replies and not all this Englo show-offing as soon as I get to your posts.

You're blabbering without need for so many words, IMO. I'd say, you attempted once to be successful novel writer. Then, your novels weren't that popular, and you got yourself new 'platform' at eChina.

Chinese 'mu-waos' don't talk as much as you do, but that's understandable.

Do you want to prove, you're good at spotting Chinese Gov posters? Maybe, some of us can detect the same, and we're show-offing a bit less than you.

Your Yank's heritage comes out from trying to figure out where posters come from. It's a silent attempt to show your superiority by replying 'I'm an 'merican', 'cause that's great, best nation of all. Wait, I got to pee.

OK, I'm back! It's an anon Board, and nobody cares who's from where.

Now for the record, I tell you I'm working in China as an English teacher longer term, in the same language as you learned in the same time as you started to learn how to walk. Why is that such a big deal you're Native English speaker/writer? Everybody walks.....

Think about possibility of replying to me in any other language than your native is. You can pick 4 different languages, beside Englo and I'll understand you, before you hit me with 'your Chinese-translator-written Englo' and 'I don't understand your English'.

I asked why and I think (but can't be sure but his response was encoded) that he got really angry. It's hard to tell. I think he believes it's not wise to talk about the NSA online because the NSA is watching.

For example he calls snowden as 'Up-Yours', which was never clear until he said it plainly so I think his coding defeats the purpose of communicating cause no one understands.

http://answers.echinacities.com/question/which-word-would-be-best-replacement-phrase-yours-your-opinion. Again!

It's software, you mumbo! Certain words get tail, and if used in online texts, IP address and all other things are on review at Security agencies. That's why it's wiser to write 'Allan's Snack Bar' than the real thing. You still don't get it? Say it aloud 'ALLAN'S SNACK BAR' and listen how u sound, and you'll see you sound very similar as the word begins with the same first four letters.....and ends with same six letters. That's a lot of similarities between some 13 letters in total, wouldn't u say? I'm not sure, if that classifieds as 'encrypted'. Probably not, so I'd say some of you really need 'guide-dog' to understand my written Englo.

The other thing I spotted is ''Native English readers/speakers see word first as 'spelling'' and I ''see'/hear it as a 'sound'' in my Non-language. I had to learn proper spelling too, but for me isn't difficult to draw similarities between one word in two different languages with different spelling, but the same sound, when pronounced in both languages, i.e. Chinese sound at word 'dice' is the same as 'shit' in other language I'm familiar with. Natives most likely dismiss it as 'misspelling'."

'Up-yours' was chosen name, because US Security(LOL) System got one up to their gills. Ming bai?

That's what I call it 'coded', and one needs to move grey matter a bit to understand.

add-it: 'I read you said 3 times 'he got angry...' Does repeating prove/underline fact is true in Englo? If A is 'no', you sound like Floridian arara.

My ECG is 120/75 high and 115/70 low, what is cool blood pressure or heart beat similar as in elephants. I was trained in Martial arts at young age, where most important drill is 'don't ever get angry', in other words 'use knowledge only at defence'.

Most likely, I don't get angry very often.

I guess my question to you would be to ask if you ever thought about what you're missing out on in life because of this obsession with online security.

You say you're a trader and if so that's cool...that's definitely doing something...but how much more could you get done if you didnt spend your time obsessing over your anti-US/spying stuff? Of course the US govt is full of shit. Nearly all govts are, US is just the easiest target right now.

What valuable skills have you not learned in the time you spend every day on zero hedge and posting about snowden and putin and your whole crew of anti-american heroes?

Are the specific problems in your life really caused by the US government? If so, is posting online going to fix them? Probably not on both counts but definitely not on the 2nd one. Odds are what is holding you back from a more enriching life is your own choices. And that's a good thing, you can't stop the NSA from spying on you. You can get yourself in a good situation if you think it through hard enough and apply yourself.

And Hell yeah I like to write and share ideas here. Lot of smart people on this board somehow and I can work through conversation topics here and sound even smarter/more interesting in person when I have to impress someone. But I find writing to be personally enriching, and I also have a demanding full time corporate job and am halfway through an MBA program. I make sure that writing online doesn't take away from the parts of my life that matter and brings value to the parts which do.

How did you come to conclusion am missing something on life? Maybe, that's my life.

You're expanding your motion my posting at eChina-titties is bad, harmful and not giving me a life, but there's no more to this than just skip the titles you don't like, like you skipped that thread where explanation of 'Up-yours' was clearly given. You sound 'ben' here, because you don't understand, what that and few other things I post mean. You should read every thread and posts in detail, IMHO.

Why I'm around? SAFEA is one reason, and I share my experience with everybody here. Some feedback I got was 'very helpful, thank you!', beside reading useless replies of you and few others on the subject, i.e. 'yeah, you should go to HK....', after poster asked about RP, visa or similar matter. I wanted to comment: 'Where is HK?' and add 'Thank you!' right after that.

Generally, I'm having fun on Internet, being on this Board or others elsewhere I participate.

Why I am even writing this? Everything is free, so I don't get it, what's the real problem.? Oh yeah, my English is getting on some posters nerves, 'cause I can't defend your statements how my Englo sucks. That's all it is. I'm Non, and I have to take it.

However, I hope me being equal to anyone of you for the last 7 years, who's selling something you learned while licking an ice-cream, doesn't upset you much.

Lucky us, there're many Native English posters in China, all with proper syntax.

Another rule:

#6: Don't hand-wave china's problems by mentioning lesser versions that exist in other countries

When someone makes an observation about their life in China which is negative, it does not cancel out the observation to point out that the negative situation can also exist in another country.

http://answers.echinacities.com/question/its-official-many-chinese-are-r...

Morget's comment there is pretty much spot on for all the rules

Shining_brow:

Or greater versions! "At least we're not as bad as..." (usually "America")

"Democracy doesn't work - look at America"... grrr....

Remember that story a few years back where they started running columns about small business complaints in the US?

http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1245786/outrage-after-peoples-dailys-dishonest-americans-column-goes-viral?page=all

Don't feel bad that our country has a problem, because other country has a problem too! Therefore they are HYPOCRITES to say anything about us.

I think a big part of the insecurity culture here is to set an impossible standard...that only godly perfection has the right to criticize others. In practice this means nothing ever changes.

And another.... this planet has more than just China and America.

Democracy is in more countries than the USA (which has the most absurd form of  'democracy' on the planet!)

And Paris is NOT romantic!
