Q: Availability of Workout Equipment?

Can you purchase things like hand weights, balls and other gear at places like (ugh) Walmart or the like?

Yes, check out the sports section at Walmart or ask your local wal-mart representative to assist you. You could also get a bike and ride it around town. You could find all kinds of balls...basketball, soccerball, football.

Not to mention the famous Ping Pong Balls....hehehe!

I have a coworker from Chengdu and he said there is a place called Haitun Sports which should carry stuff like that.  It's on South Renmin Road apparently.  I personally don't know Chengdu, but I'm told you can find what you're looking for there.  I guess they don't have big equipment like treadmills, etc.  But hand weights and the like they should.

I'm also told that Chengdu hosts the China International Sporting Goods show, so I suppose it should be easy enough to find sporting goods there!

HugAPanda:

Oh very cool, Mr. T. Thanks. I'll be ok without a treadmill for the 6 months, but hand weights and an exercise ball would be great, and even better if I don't have to carry them. Thank you for your very thoughtful answer, even better than I had hoped for :)

Hopefully it helps. Again, I'm not personally sure, but I figured I would pass on the info!

I bought a couple of 10 pounds hand weights for home excercizing at the local Walmart store and paid about 80 Rmb each.  They had a few of different weights, like from 5 to 10 pounds each.  I also bought a couple of those hand springs to squeeze as I sit watching TV or computer, those where 27 Rmb for the pair.
If you are into a Walmart store, look for the bike display area, and what you are looking for should be nearby.

HugAPanda:

Thanks Happy :) I think there is a walmart very close to where I will be, so it'll be convenient. I just don't want to carry them on the plane.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
