Mine has 19, counted twice. Since I am in a different province, I doubt the first numbers would be the same, it's a pretty big bank and they have different series of account numbers from location to location.
Presuming you are somewhere near to a branch of BOC, you could try there. The staff may be able to check the number on their system to identify the authenticity of the account.
You could get correct info about BOC account in any Bank in China.
My BOC account, opened in Hebei has 19 digits.
OK, I am also in Nanning, and have an account with Bank of China too. My passbook I do not have with me, but from memory it does has a lot of numbers starting with a 6. I also have an ATM debit card which has 19 digits as a number, and they are different from my account number. Both can be used to access you account with no problem when making a transfer of funds, or whatever. Maybe the person gave you both, his passbook account number, and his debit card number. But as someone above said, your best bet will be to visit a Bank of China branch and ask them what do those numbers mean, or ask whomever gave them to you.
Thanks guys for your prompt input.. I am in UK, we dont have BOC here only HSBC. Will check back with this person before we go any further, Bubbsie
It sound legitimate to me. I have a Nanning account of 18 numbers and it starts with 4807530. The account you mention maybe older than mine. If the account has a Chinese name (in Chinese) I can't help you as I don't speak of write Chinese but if it is in English make sure that you write it EXACTLY as it is in their bankbook. In the West one can write "Fred B. NERK" as F.B. NERK , NERK Fred B, or NERK F.B. and it will be accepted but not in China. Also, if you are transferring money from the West, make sure that the recipient takes their Passport and bankbook with them. There is a heap of paperwork to do and many signatures to sign but there is usually someone in the branch who knows a little English especially in the Gucheng Road Branch. the SWIFT code is BKCHNBJ480.
