Q: Bank statement requirement for L visa extension

Is it true that I will need to show evidence of sufficient bank balance to extend the tourist visa? If so, what is the amount required? And do I need to have a deposit at a Chinese bank or would record of an overseas bank would do?

It depends on where in China you are, where you are from, and it also depends if they actually ask for it.  In Shanghai, I have heard mixed reports.  They ask sometimes, other times they don't.  If they DO ask for it, they only need a statement and they're basically looking for about 25-30,000 rmb or more ($4-5000usd) to ensure you have enough money for your "visit". Can be from a foreign bank as far as I know.

In Beijing, I've heard that this money actually physically needs to be in a Chinese bank account, but I don't have any first hand experience.

Again, it depends on where you are in China.  I would find out the requirements of your local area PSB, they will tell you what documents you need.

I had to do this at the first school I worked at because they needed more time to obtain the Z visa paperwork before I went to HK for the Z visa. ( Yes, I worked on the L visa for awhile, as they told me they would not give the Z visa if I didn't)      Anyways, yes, to extend the L visa, I had to put 20000 RMB into a Chinese bank account, not a statement from my home country bank. A pain in the butt for a 3 week extension, as that was all they gave.

Here at the Nanning PSB, you need to show the authorities an up to date bank statement with at least twenty thousand reminbi in it for an extension to a L visa.
