Q: Bbc documentary about the Datong wall.
Has anybody seen the bbc documentary about the mayor of Datong and his past determination to build great wals around his city? He was hoping to make Datong a cultural capital. I wondered if part of you admired him for constructing something that might last hundreds of years becoming iconic, or if a 3 billion dollar debt in a city of grinding poverty wasn't particularly clever. Any wider reflections on the role of Chinese mayors and the power they yield. Or party officials.

Corruption. Projects like this whether in the states or China have 1 purpose. Funnel tax dollars into personal accounts.
All Chinese cities from quite smallish (e.g. 1 million people) and up have gotten cultural venues like opera houses in recent years. How many are actually used for the intended purpose if used at all. Face building combined with money grabbing.
