No, I have never been lied to, conned or robbed in China! The people here are so honest and trustworthy.

Why has my nose just grown about twenty inches?

Robbed definitely not. I'm not sure if I've been lied to or coned, but it's quite possible.

Not to my knowledge. I have been asked to pay laowai prices once or twice but usually my wife prevents that and if she isn't around I don't know I'm paying over the odds, plus to be honest, I almost never buy stuff alone, I leave that to her.

Conned and lied to constantly, almost a daily thing.

Just found out, after living in the new flat for nearly a year, that I am paying a different price

for vegetables, etc, in the market than my wife. Neither of us are amused and now only shop in the supermarket.

You only ever lost a phone? Consider yourself lucky! I've lost about 3 phones, 2 bikes, my camera, a wad of cash and my temper (hehe)! I've been scammed, ripped off, pointed at and laughed at, many times. It's all part of the China initiation process I suppose. What's that saying, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" or something like that.

mike168229:

How long do you think an initiation should last?

Mine has been going for about four years according to your standards.

Good point. On second thought, screw the 'initiation' excuse. It's called being robbed, pure and simple.

I had a boss outright lie to me... which was rather stupid of her, considering EVERYONE knew the truth!

Had another boss lie, cos he's an arsehole and didn't want to have to do anything...

I've got a restaurant I go to regularly where the laoban constantly lies to me about the price! She'll get out the calculator, put in the advertised prices, and come to a certain price - and then tells me it's less than that!!!!!

Robbed or conned...no...but only because I am very careful and trust no one (like Fox Mulder)  Lied to?  I think a more apt reply would be..there are only a few people who have NOT lied to me.  My ex girlfriend as an example would not only lie to me but to her friends and family too all the time...usually just to save face.

Sometimes I've paid more for things because I'm a foreigner, but as for the fruit stand guy, in the end he's the one who lost all his business. I have a feeling I wasn't the only one given higher prices.

I got coned for 50 rmb at the Butterfly Bar downtown Kunming.  satisfactory I would say, but in the future I will stick with the ol' hexagon w/ a bit of the trapezoid thrown in towards the climax...   ex-gf had it down.
