Q: Been hearing stories about houses getting broken into over CNY. Has that ever happened to you?

I've got my doors and windows barred shut and my valuables hidden away after I keep hearing about these Spring Festival thieves. Know anyone who actually had this happen to them?

I had a couple of ladies - one older, one younger, knock on my apartment door one night.

They told my wife that they were representing Walmart and wanted to demonstrate the cleaning products that Walmart offered.

I asked my wife, "Do they have any Walmart I.D? Do you think that Walmart does such a thing?" Out went the two women.

I have heard countless tales of people whose apartment has been entirely cleaned out during Spring Festival. People move, people marry, guards are too drunk or busy...

Make sure that your door has a dead bolt and that said dead bolt cannot be easily be pushed through or dug out.

Tell the security of your building that you aren't moving or having electronics repaired during the holiday (and make sure that you give them a decent red envelope or bottle of baijiu).

And back up your computer files now! Get an external hard drive or upload to a cloud service but get those files backed up! Everyone cries blue murder when their phone or laptop goes missing but it only takes a few minutes to back those puppies up.

Scandinavian:

....or maybe not tell security that you will be away for CNY. If I wanted to break in to my own apartment I would go pay off a security guard to help.

Last CNY they did put up notices in our building about potential for burglaries during CNY, as far as I know there has only been 2 break ins in our community in the two years we've lived here. It is several thousand apartments (OK; I might not know of all of them)

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
