Q: Being a male Chinese American is it possible to get a teaching job in China?

I am interested in teaching however I notice they do not hire Asian faces even though I speak perfect English. Any tips?

From what I have seen, you could get a teaching job, but you'll be paid less than your "white-face" colleagues.

Sangoku is correct, You can find a job here quite easy. Unfortunately you will get less paid as Parents want to see a White face... young, old ugly or fat it doesn't matter. Even if your qualification is better.

you can get a job with the same pay, you must stick to your guns and be firm with the recruiters and the schools. trust me recruiters kept telling me i'm "asking for too much many schools wont hire blacks" but after a lot of work i got my job in one of the shortlist cities i wanted for the pay i wanted.
the mentality that chinese have here is"i think you you have less value, why dont you think so?"

and stick to public universities private schools are more likely to fire you if their spoiled students complain it happens to africans and asians

since it is last minute you will have to accept an unfavorable city, baotou , shenyang, hohhot, dalian among others use wiki to get a list of schools in each of the cities you are considering use google chrome to translate the websites that dont have english websites and contact the school directly
if you want i can be your recruiter but i charge 2000rmb upfront Tongue

It depends what school/company you work for. I have a few ABC friends and they've had great contracts working for schools in China. From their experience, private langague schools were less likely to hire them because they don't look "white". Public schools and universities care more about your qualifications and whether or not you're a native speaker than your skin color.

I'd sell yourself as a good teacher for beginners cause you can properly explain things to them in CHina (if you speak it)

If you have a degree and a TEFL or CELTA, you'll get a job no problem. Try applying with the big companies, English First, Wall Street, WEB International, New Dynamic Institute, they don't care what color you are as long as you have the proper certification and you are a NATIVE speaker.

Hey Chinese American Male:

Let me be real with you.  I look Asian.

I was hired last summer by an international school in china and have been working here since. The kids love me, the school supports me and the parents "buy" my style of teaching.

How I got in? I know there is a ***SELECTIVE SKIN ISSUE*** going on. Any Asian (especially, the orients) knows this. If China is the place you want to work in....you've got to accept this reality and squeeze ALL your talents onto your Cover Letter, Brush up your "Teaching" CV and get backup (TEFL instructors are the best). Of course, teaching experience counts hella heps.

TIPS In your email to the "school"-
1. Cover Letter
- emphasis your were born and raised in USA
- tell them you have a perfect American accent (include a voice clip)**
- include that you grad from a US uni, stress that you have a TEFLCert

2. CV
- don't post up any pics: let them see you for your qualifications
- provide any supportive referrence regarding your teaching experi.

3. BACKUP
- call up your TEFL Instructor and have them look into what connections they have

*** Yo, represent!! We need to stand up and be loud. We asians can teach English. Its a movement!! Get hired quick and make a statement. Do you know my cousin went to Tibet for a summer english course and they wanted to send him home because they thought anyone from the states is WHITE? Do you know you need to EDUCATE these people by ACTION. Spread the word- ASIANS CAN TEACH ENGLISH ****

Best of Luck Chinese American Male.

Hello!
First of all, best of luck in your search!  I think Hollerdoller has given you the best advice so far. I would only add, that if/when you see your less qualified white colleagues get paid more or be oppenly praised even though they may be pathetic clowns, breathe deeply. Here, appearance is often valued higher than content.
Best of luck!

Depends on where you go, if you have the blue passport you'll be fine. If you were born and raised in the US, you'll be fine, if you don't have an Asian accent, you'll be fine. promote yourself and do some fact to face or skype interviews

kchur:

BS. I worked for a large private school once that turned away several Asian-Brits, found by a recruiter, on arrival. And look at all the "whites only" posts on the job boards of this very site.

That's why I said it depends on where you go. Anyway, try a public school first, not a private school, you'll have better luck. Little London of Inner Mongolia hires all types, they are legit and a Brit friend of mine is 20% owner. They're honest and pay is good for this part of China.

kchur, I know it's usually white's only, but those schools are usually in areas that have access to a large foreign market of employees. Everyone know's that ESL is a marketable and easy job to find in China. Glad not to be one of those sterotypical ESL teachers.

I started as an academic teacher for a Major University, then worked at an International School also as an Academic Teacher while doing an internship as a lawyer for an international law firm.

So which one are you kchur?
