And I don't mean that Chinese water. What's the best beer you've found available here, whether it be in an import shop or on Taobao. I'm quite enjoying a beer called Scrimshaw at the moment. It's a Pilsner style ale from California. Really nice and not bitter. I don't enjoy overly bitter ales. Obviously it's a lot more price wise than the Chinese water. But I can't stand most of the Chinese crap.
Erm.....arts and entertainment, yes.

In GZ there is now a small but growing craft beer scene. All brewed locally.
Rocky's black beauty stout & the Strands dark IPA being two of my favourites.
There re is also a good selection of imported American beers now and the Boulevard Tank 7 is one of the best in my tasting experience.
ScotsAlan:
Very strong tho. I prefer beer at about 3.5% by volume. When I drink GZ craft beer I always end up in the cave.
Hotwater:
You end up in the Cave after drinking bloody Zhujiang or Tsingtao!
Though you're right....the craft beers are too strong. The Tank 7 is about 8.5%!!
Hotwater:
Both the locally brewed beers I mentioned are 40/pint. Same price as a pint of generic lager. But....both are about 6-7% so stronger. The Strand bar in GZ normally has about 6 craft beers on tap and 4-5 good imported beers. Plus a big selection of bottles.

Best beer I ever had... but I don't think it's very fancy. Not in the 'Craft' beer league~

Chinese idea of a Wine Cooler ~
Hotwater:
That Sierra Nevada is a good beer. There's a great selection of imported American beers in GZ now if you know where to look.
I have drank a lot of beer, over the years.. lots of different beers, from lots of different places.
By no means a connoisseur, but I know what I like.
What is available to me... I prefer Harbin ..... and what I normally drink is Yanjiang, because it is cheap and really pretty good.
I would love to sit for 2 days and just taste some good beers.... wishful thinking....cool/cold and delicious beer, I wish.
i had an australian beer called VB. It was awesome, possibly my favorite beer.
tsingtao is the best chinese beer. it is even possible to buy the normal 4% in some places
ScotsAlan:
I like VB bitter. But the ozziies hate it. Had this conversation here before.
royceH:
Will drink VB, but only if there's nothing else. No, would drink it before West End.
I am definitely not a beer snob. I like good old fashioned generic lagers. Tiger or Carlsburg. Mcawleys Futian has MGD!! And for only 22 kuai. I have it as often as I can. Im sure it will disapear soon.
Craft beer is horrible. There is a reason these companies are tiny.
Me, hotwater and Scotts went on a craft beer tour and i drank maybe one beer the whole night in total haha. Every single one was brutal. And they were.so determined to be hipster fucks that not a single normal beer was for sale in any of the bars.
Hotwater:
Haha, one of the bars sold draught Asahi...that's almost a generic lager!
I know what you mean by the hipster part, all this "hand crafted" bollocks!
mike695ca:
Lol That Asahi was,in fact, my one beer of the night. Free beers all night and im the idiot paying.
Hotwater:
We know you have no taste Mike...you drive a white Audi with extra white on the chrome!
Asahi and Kirin.
I buy them in Metro, about 85 rmb/12 bottles box. Can't beat the price/constant quality/taste ratio.
All Chinese beers are sour fizzy crap in comparison.
My favorite is an ice-cold Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc. Yes, it has a hint of citrus, so maybe it's not the most MANLY of brews, but oh maaaaaaaaaaan it's tasty.
Umm, I tend to find any number of German wheat beers seem to be the best or only option, if you want something above the stale, watery Chinese beers. Usually you'll go into a shop in GZ that actualy has imported beer and there will be like 6 different Hefeweizens that all taste the same. If you are really lucky you might find some Belgian beer like La Chouffe or Delirium Tremens. That's good shit, but wouldn't be common. They all have lower import fees than premium American beers for some reason.
Hotwater:
If you like Belgian beers like lachoufe then you really should try the Strand. They have a couple of their beers on fraught at reasonable prices for a "western" bar. Plus their own Guangzhou Brewer beers are excellent.
