Q: Best book written about china that you've ever read?

The one I've just about finished reading is really great.  The author's ability to explain, matter-of-factly, the reality of chinese life is brilliant.

It's titled 'From the Dragon's Mouth' and was written by Ana Fuentes and published by Penguin.

I recommend you try to get your hands on a copy but would advise against getting a copy sent here in the mail.  I've tried that several times before and anything from the West with a china connection has been stolen/confiscated by the powers that be.

NB;  I bought it on a recent trip to Australia and would wager London to a brick it will never be available on the mainland.

What do you recommend?

Peking.  Can't remember the author, but it is a novel about English missionaries caught up in the Long March and the period following it.  Based on a true story.

Edit - Author was Anthony Grey, he also wrote Saigon

Said it once in another post this week but, The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.

earthizen:

You probably would also enjoy China as I See It. One of her last books, it was published in 1971,  40 years after The Good Earth and two years before her death, this non-fiction probably has a lot more insights. I don't think someone like her would stop growing and 40 years is a long time.

Hahahaha.... I'm definitely a peasant and they reckon I'm a shifu.

I know my wife calls black taxi drivers "shifu" so that sits well enough with me.  You know...just getting by on the periphery of the norm...
