I'm thinking of hiking up Huangshan over the summer as it's relatively near to where I am, but as a lover of the great outdoors (and motorbikes) I'd love to hear your thoughts on what other mountains are worth climbing here. I know names such as Emei Shan, Taishan, Wutaishan, and Huashan, but what do you think?

There is a mountain at the west of Beijing it's called ShangSan or maybe it was HuangShan. That mountain is really good. Go during the summer time the scenery there is beautiful. And trust me you will like this mountain if you climbed it. Has a good top view once you get to the peak. You could pay like 60 rmb to ride the cart that takes you up or simply pay the entrance fee and climb the mountain yourself.
Huangshan's definitely worth a visit, just make sure you get your legs broken in with some exercise before making the climb or you'll be walking around stiff-jointed and soar for a week. And make sure you visit the Grand Canyon (part of the mountain), it's the best bit. Not been to those other places, except Emeishan. That was fogged out so I can't really comment. My favourite place so far has been Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan. Outstandingly beautiful.
mount tai was 140 round trip on the ski lift or 60 for admission, prices went up this year though, 17000 steps to the top , so im told, did this twice but steps are narrow , about 22 cm so walking down is more dangerous than walking up if your show size 48 like myself.
mount tai has a lot of history so its better to have a chinese person translate what your looking at but that was not available to me when i was there. many visitors will ask for photo with you, especially college girls, may feel traumatized by being used for eye candy but i got over it quickly
The Grand Canyon in Enshi, was there three months ago very beautiful in the winter so I would imagine the summer would be much nicer.
I live in Sichuan, and i've been to Emeishan, as well as other nearby mountains like Wawushan and Bifengxia(Panda reserve). Emeishan is highest, very beautiful, lots of temples and snow monkeys. I went in early autumn, and the scenery was absolutely amazing. I think Sichuan has any other province beat when it comes to scenery. Large parts of the province are considered 'protected landscape', and Emeishan even survived the destruction of temples by the revolution - some story about a scouting officer reccommending it be preseved for its history and beauty, cleverly omitting the presense of buddhist temples.
In Yunnan, Mei Li mountain is nice, if you don't mind a gentle trek on a track. The Tiger Leap Gorge trek is great, if you do it full length. Both requires actual trekking shoes and good fitness.
As mentioned above, Sichuan is a sure shot for mountains. Dan Ba village is a day from Chengdu, gorgeous and unknown gem. From there, reach Ta Gong grassland. Easy peasy, magical place. There are huge gorgeous mountains you can see around, I climbed some. Requires great health (6000 meters, you gonna spit your lungs) and being familiar with mountains (no track, no indications, no maps, nobody, dodgy ice fields, hard to find anything combustible). Don't climb unless you know what you are doing and is equipped.
