Just got back from a mini driving holiday, went to Luizhou (nice), Danzhou island (primitive but 'real' china, and plenty of interesting history), and Sanjiang (sp?), latter was okay but a mediocre town, went to a good cultural show, but got eaten by mozzies. I suppose, really it depends on what you want.
Jiuzhaigou, about 9 hours drive north of Chengdu, absolutely hands down the most beautiful place i've seen in my whole life. It's a national park and I intend to see it in every season. It's also got some decent places to visit nearby, like a panda reserve and a marvelous place called Huanglong. If you ever make it there take a passport photo and they'll give you a two day pass for 320. Otherwise it's 300 for one day. Well worth a visit. Heavenly.
Huangshan in Anhui province takes second place. Don't join a tour guide, they miss the best bits. And book a hotel in the mountains online, if they see a western face they'll double the rates.
As for Guangxi where I live, it would be a shame to visit without seeing Longji (or Longshen, I can't remember) the rice terraces. Very cool place. Took a hundred years to fashion.
I enjoyed Dali in Yunnan. I should preface this by saying I haven't traveled much, though.
Lake Tian Chi, an hour or so out of Urumqi. It's spectacularly beuatiful. Really, truly gorgeous.
Dalian (during the summer), Harbin (during VERY short winter trips), Macau and Hong Kong.
fengkuang, a traditional town in Hunan 5hrs drive from Changsha. there you will see the houses foot in the river.Awesome!
I agree with Gaohao above, Jiuzhaigou is the most beautiful place I have seen in China and many other parts of the world. I was very impressed by the care given to the environment there by the Tibetans, it was hard to see any litter anywhere there. I also noticed that the tour gudes did not use amplification, and the groups seemed much smaller. Here, the emphasis seemed to be on protecting the environment, rather than extracting the last rmb from tourists.
Every other place I have been to in China are toxic trash dumps, converted into bizarre chinese style disney worlds of ribbons, lanterns, noodle shops, facades of ethnic minorities etc.
I went to Jiuzhaigou in the Spring, and the water levels were down and I will return this Autumn, and again next Spring.
Being a nature lover, I quite enjoyed climbing the Yellow Mountain (Anhui) and riding the bike around Yangshuo (Guanxi). The sunset and sunrise are a must see in the former, even though the hotel on the top of the mountain is a living nightmare. The latter is to explore by motorcycle or bike, only if not excessively hot.
