One of my biggest freedoms in China was the lack of mind numbing TV. My GF would turn on the TV and was gone. My not watching TV meant that I had to go out, I'd do things like walk the 5 kms to walking streets. At home 5 kms would get me no where.

Can't you pick your own package? Get everything.

a TV package that shows foreign programs: local TV is rubbish.

alternatively being in China can, as Ted says, liberate you from television and not having it is a great excuse to go out and meet local people

If you insist on your fix of Americana or whatever, you can always download: then you are in control of the content.
