The last few months in China have worn me out emotionally. I need a break, somewhere quiet, tranquil, remote...away from large crowds. Any suggestions? A sacred mountain or Buddhist monastery perhaps?

Shaolin Temple springs to mind, though I've heard it's pretty commercial these days. When I have periods like that, I like nothing better than to lock myself up in my apartment with a good few movies for a while.

I guess a remote place in China would become for a foreigner a photo session with locals......when i was in HK, being ignored for almost a week, worked perfectly!
hence, even if it may sound a contraddiction, I'd say Hong Kong
I guess it depends on where you are today. What part of China? In Qingdao, the weather is quite nice lately and there are beaches far from the madding crowd where you could chill out for a while. In addition to that, there is a forest not far from one of the more remote beaches that is something of a retreat spot where you can rent a small log cabin for a weekend, a week or a month. I don't recall the name at the moment, but if you're serious, you can pm me and I can try to find out the name of the place.
Another suggestion is to go accompanied cause there would be no one to talk to in that neck of the woods.
