Q: Best university or language center to learn Mandarin in Shanghai...?

I'm looking for a school that is not too expensive and I can learn some Chinese. I read an article about Universities vs. Language Centers, so I wonder if there is any school recommendations here in Shanghai.

I know the best way to learn a language is by exposing yourself to the environment. However, I would like to learn the academic side of mandarin, plus their thousands of characters.

I moved here about three months ago, and so far I know some food items, a few bad words, and of course "ping pijiu."

Thanks.

the best way i believe is  to get into a 1 year intensive (30-40 hrs/week) university course with the cheapest tuition fee or a full scholarship, the university is full with thousands of students willing have language exchange with a foreign student!

use the cucas.edu.cn to browse the course and universities

Best Universities to study Chinese Language in Shanghai are Jiaotong and Fudan University... both of them are a bit on the pricey side though...

If you want to be exposed to Chinese, Shanghai is probably the worst city in the country you could pick. Not only do they speak English the whole time, but also when they speak Chinese, they either speak Shanghainese or Mandarin with a horrible accent.

If you want to expose yourself to standard Mandarin, I suggest to have a look at some Chinese courses in Northern China.

where the hell do they speak english in shanghai?

i lived half a year in shanghai, worked for an international company and the only person who spoke english was my assistant.

maybe mc donalds and banks do speak english but thats about it, if you dont count the bitches in clubs who just wanna hook foreigners

There is no need for you to find a school in Shanghai, if you have your own work, don't have enough time for you, best choice for you is learning it online. There is a free trial on hanbridgemandarin, you can have a try. Another way for learning it is to find partner who is good at this can help you.
